The monastic site of Moone (Maen Columcille) is 1km W of the N9 road at the village of Moone. A monastery was founded here sometime between 540-550 CE by St Columba (Columcille) who later went to Iona. There is a 17 foot granite high cross from the 7th-9th century CE and also part of a second high cross.
The high cross is said to be the second tallest cross in Ireland standing at 5 metres tall and dating from about the 8th century CE. It is quite a slender cross with a tapered base; but it is very richly carved on all four sides. There was some damage on the cross-head - though this has been restored.
On the cross there are 51 panels with biblical scenes on each side of the base and shaft, no one side being better than another. The depictions (W and E faces) include Christ's crucifixion, Adam and Eve, the sacrifice of Issac, Moses and the flight into Egypt, Daniel in the lions' den, the miracle of the loaves and fishes (N face), numerous animals, serpents coiled together fighting lions along with the Temptation of St Athony (N face), and also 12 square-shaped apostles with pear-shaped heads. Many of the other figures are square-shaped, quite odd really. There is something for everyone on this cross!
Another cross, now broken into fragments, was a holed wheel-head cross. This probably dated from the 9th century CE. There is nothing much of St Columba's monastery left now, apart from the ruins of a monastic church which dates from the 13th century and was probably built over the foundations of the Celtic monastery.
