Cairn in Lancashire

About 3 miles NE of Longridge is Jeffrey Hill a picnic area at the edge of Longridge Fell. 200 yards NE of the car park there is a Bronze Age cairn circle which is not marked on the OS map. It is a circular feature of loose stones, some of which have been placed here in more recent times. Sadly, the site has become overgrown with heather, but in all it measures between 25-30 feet in diameter.

It is similar in some respects to the Bronze-Age cairn circle at Turton to the S of Blackburn which was said to have been a roundhouse.

To the NW of Jeffrey Hill where the hillside falls away from the circle, there is a rectangular feature/earthwork measuring 70 ft x 15 ft. This was thought to have been an entrance or portal to the site. And a little further away, in the same direction and close to the Roman road to Ribchester, are traces of hut circles together with a tumulus/burial mound, now alas difficult to see at ground level.

Jeffrey Hill Cairn Circle
Jeffrey Hill Cairn Circle submitted by Sunny100 : Jeffrey Hill on the edge of Longridge Fell, Lancashire. One of the guide pointer stones placed in a round hollow with stones within - could this be a small hut circle that has been vandalised. Notice someone has placed a single rose in the little circle. Jeffrey Hill Cairn Circle
Jeffrey Hill Cairn Circle submitted by Sunny100 : Jeffrey Hill on the edge of Longridge Fell. Another view of the large stone that appears to have one or perhaps two cup-marks. I am not certain whether these are prehistoric or of a more recent date - a kind of vandalism perhaps. Photo taken on 11/10/10. (Vote or comment on this photo)
