Mounted on an octagonal, tapering shaft, dating from the 1800s and a square base with an inscription of a similar date, this round-headed Gothic cross-head is carved on the W side with three figures: Christ crucified in the middle with St Mary Magdalen and St John the Evangelist at either side. The E side is eroded but Christ on his own crucified can be made out. Below him there is foliage. Both sides of the cross have tracery. The original shaft has long since gone.
The square base has a Victorian inscription recalling the XIII hundredth year of the introduction of Christianity. The cross is now a listed monument. Also in the churchyard a sundial on a thin shaft, dating from the 1680s. There has been speculation that the cross-head came from Sawley Abbey, nearby. Some of the architectural features inside the 13th century church certainly came from there.
The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this site - see their entry for Mitton Church Cross, Great Mitton, Lancashire, which gives directions for finding this cross, together with photographs, an early drawing of the cross-head and a brief archaeology & history. The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for the Churchyard Calvary Cross, Great Mitton, Lancashire, which includes photographs, directions for finding this site, a description, background information about the possible original location of this cross and a list of reference sources for more information.
A very brief mention in given in Pastscape Monument No. 514342, which simply says: "in the churchyared is a fragment of a 14th century cross decorated with a crucifix and Saints Mary and John." The church of All Hallows is scheduled; for details of the interior and exterior architecture (no mention is made of this cross) see Historic England List ID 1163432.
