Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Lancashire
Not quite the usual holy well, but for walkers over Scout Moor and along the Rossendale Way, this well head, built over the site of an ancient spring, " makes for a fine contemplative viewpoint and resting place" according to the Edenfield Community Forum website.
The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for Waugh’s Well, Scout Moor, Near Edenfield, Lancashire which tells us this well is in a windswept and lonely spot. The well head was built in 1866 to commemorate Edwin Waugh, the famous poet, who used to sit by the spring; this is where he is said to have produced his finest work. The well head was then rebuilt in 1966 in memory of Ward Ogden, a local naturalist and rambler.
Also visit the Holcombe Village website for photographs and a little more information about the location of the well in Waugh's time.
Note: Has anyone visited this site? Do you know if there are any local traditions or legends about this spring before the well head was built?
