Derwic Well
Derwic Well submitted by rogerkread : Adventurous scrambling required to reach this, which I presume is the remains of Derwic Well as it fits the description being backed by a wall, there are the very sketchy remains of the paths shown on the OS map leading to it, and it appears to be a stone basin, though there is no trace of a building. Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Derbyshire.
A fertility site as women who drank of its waters were said to be made fruitful.

This site is difficult to find, and arises in a small, about two feet by three feet, stone lined and roofed chamber set into the hill side. It is marked on the current O/S laying in a small copse. Look for a wall and it is just infront of this.

Derwic Well submitted by rogerkread : A slightly closer view showing what appears to be a worked stone which has fallen into the pool. Note if you are trying to visit, the (slightly) easier route is through the little gate next to the footpath sign beside the old packhorse track. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: Derwic Well by Anonymous on Wednesday, 01 June 2016
Hi, We went to this well yesterday and we're really happy to find what felt like am ancient sacred place. The stone-lined chamber can be seen if you look into the dark recess where the water is. It is dressed stone and I wonder how old it is. The rest of the well appeared to have included a reservoir enclosed by stone. We found it using a 1:25,000 Is map coming up a deep side clough from Bretton Clough.

Went again today. There is a steep little valley below the pool. I went down this to get below the pool. The pool seems to be surrounded by a retaining wall. I did not see anything that looked like a chamber. See the 1883 OS map which shows a circular enclosure.

Visited the site today using the 1:25000 OS map. What I found was a small marshy pool at the foot of a small tree lined bank. The pool is just above a steep drop into Bretton Clough. There are remains of walls to the rear of the pool but nothing like a stone lined and roofed chamber. Perhaps what I saw was something above the well and the well itself is further down near the edge of the hill. Worth another visit.
