The Nun's Well (Surrey)

Holy Well in Surrey.

Close to St Anne's (or St Ann's) Hillfort (note different spelling), the well is associated with a ruined chapel.

To be found on the "St. Ann's Hill Nature Trail", in fact a trek through quite thick forest next to the M3. Although there is a map at the car park, there seem to be many more paths than are shown and I got lost. I never did find the chapel ruins, but came across the well by luck.

From SolarMegalith: indeed, the well is not easy to find - it's hidden in the forest near one of the minor footpaths on Northern slope of the hill. During my visit there was some water standing in the well. The site has a wonderful forest ambience, which could be even better if the nearby highway wouldn't produce so much noise.

The Nun's Well (Surrey)
The Nun's Well (Surrey) submitted by Rockall777 : Monks well is part of an ancient spring reported for its medicinal virtues, it’s located on St Ann’s hill in an area called Monk’s Grove. Although it is dried up and filled with leaves and debris, there is a basin full of water several metres down the hill from the well which can be viewed. (Vote or comment on this photo)

The 'In Search Of Holy Wells and Healing Springs' website has a page of information for this well - see 'The hidden well on the hill – St Ann’s Well of St Ann’s Hill, Chertsey'.

This entry also tells us of a second well: "Another healing spring? In their A Topographical History of Surrey by Brayley and Mantell (1850) again: 'Another Spring, once highly reputed for its medicinal virtues, rises on the north-east side of the hill, in the wood or coppice called Monk’s Grove, which gives name to the seat inhabited by the Right Hon. Lady Montfort. This spring, according to Aubrey, had been long covered up and lost; but was again found and re-opened two or three years before he wrote. The water is now received into a basin about twelve feet square, lined with tiles.' It goes onto add: "James Rattue in his indispensable 2008 Holy wells of Surrey found this site stating that it resembled in part the Nun’s well and was clearly part of the landscapers attempt to improve the area. It was a dry circle of brickwork and filled with leaves. He describes it as being on the flat part of the hill. However with his instructions, OS reference and old maps showing a spring I failed to find it – although I did find another spring overgrown in the rhododendrons."

Found it through a local walker! I am surprised that it is not listed yet like St. John's well in Bisley...will enquire as it should be more protected...

I always knew it as the nuns well because of the ghost stories we were told as kids over 30 years ago...many people will tell you that the well is more often than not found by chance and when you set out to look for it you get lost it's a strange place to be. I miss the walks but not the road the M3 or the local traffic!

Re: The Nun's Well (Surrey) by Anonymous on Sunday, 14 February 2016
I have been a resident of Chertsey fo over 40 years and I do know that the water in the well at St Ann's Hill is there all the time and not just temporary. As to many of growing up, we knew it not as a Nun's Well but a Wishing Well. The hill today has been cleared of alot of the forestry around the top of the hill and has taken away much of this Hill's charm.

The ruins you couldn't find I finally found. They have converted it into a house, the ruins are attached to the house by the looks of it. So you can't get access to it without going through the house.
