I have visited· I would like to visit

JohnLindsay visited I've walked around here trying to work out which is which. Yeoveney Lodge might be how this is known, unless that is another that doesn't pop up. There is a model, or exhibition in the Museum of London. I'm still trying to work out whether this is the same one as the excavation by Roberston-Makay, in 1961-3, written up in the Prehistoric Society publication in 1987. I'm most impressed with SPARCS and their, its, engagement. The Surrey Archaeology Collections carries a list of publications on archaeology in Surrey and the more recent volumes (for which the data isn't on the web version as they still have to be sold) are in Staines Library, and Guildford, at least.

Staines Enclosure
Staines Enclosure submitted by Andy B : It's Clayhenge! Part of the brilliant display by SPARCS (Spelthorne branch of the Young Archaeologists Club) at the Community Centre, Thames Street (next to Debenham's), Chertsey until the end of May 2005. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Staines Causewayed Enclosure was built around 3000BC, partly for settlement (wooden buildings were found in the middle) and partly for special ceremonies (five people - a man, three women and a small child - were buried in the ditches).

It was built facing the Thames and measured nearly 200 metres across. For much of the year it would have been an island in the middle of the flooded Thames, Colne and Wraysbury Rivers, so both settlement and ceremonies may have been seasonal. The enclosure was used for many years, and the remains of nearly 1500 pots, over 40,000 flints, and animal bones left over from feasts were found there. The site is now under Junction 13 of the M25.

With many thanks to SPARCS (the Spelthorne branch of the Young Archaeologists Club) and Spelthorne Museum.

Decorated Neolithic Bowl from Hengrove Farm, Staines by Andy B on Tuesday, 06 August 2019
(User Info | Send a Message)
Shard from a decorated Neolithic Bowl from Hengrove Farm, Staines These sherds are from a decorated Neolithic bowl recovered during excavations at Hengrove Farm, near Staines, undertaken by the Surrey County Archaeological Unit (SCAU). The style of decoration is known as Peterborough Ware (c.3400–2700 cal BC), named after a site where a large number of these sherds were recovered. It is a type of pottery that developed out of plain Early Neolithic bowls and is very distinctive. This ware is commonly divided into three styles, Ebbsfleet, Mortlake and Fengate. Based primarily on the decoration, the vessel illustrated here Decorated Neolithic Bowl shard from Hengrove Farm, Stainesbelongs to the Ebbsfleet style, characterised by its relatively simple decoration and form.

Sorry, I meant causewayed enclosure, of course. Actually, the first paragraph of description doesn't sound like Staines causewayed enclosure either, as I think this only produced a single burial.

I was wondering, looking at it, whether Staines church is located on a mound? I asked locally and the people in the church think it is, but that it has never been excavated, as is usually the case with churches on mounds.

Incidently the link to the Victoria County History on Staines goes to the parish section. The prehistoric archaeology is in volume .. hmmm... 1 I think, published in 1969, so late for this sort of thing. The Surrey stuff for the other bank is 1903.
