St Keyne's Well submitted by AngieLake : The area of the well, on a corner where two lanes meet. En route from Liskeard to Duloe turn off [signposted to St Keyne's Well] on sharp bend in St Keyne village. About a mile downhill [a narrow road!], and this otherworldly place is on your left. Steps lead into well area from the lane, and from the road. Really, really worth a visit!

This holy well was shown on Paul Merton's Secret Stations programme on Ch4 tonight. It was referred to as 'St Keyne's Wishing Well'. It was mentioned that St Keyne, a Celtic saint from Brecon in Wales came here in 500 AD. She was the daughter of the King of Brecknock.

Mr Merton sampled the well water and said it was very nice, though he went on to say "It's not working".

I used to live in the village of St Keyne and it has always been said that once married at the church at the top of the hill from the well the Bride and groom would race down the hill and the first to drink the waters from the well would then wear the trousers in the marriage
there is also an old picture of the well in the Francis Frith collection of the well
in the picture there is a young girl by the 5bar gate, back in 1984ish the gentleman that married that young girl was at that time still alive and living in the village of St Keyne

A magical place. Go inside the area of the well and you are in another world. Green, frondy, mossy, spiritual, peaceful.....
John Michell writes about it in 'The Traveller's Key to Sacred England'.
On p.177, there is a b/w copy of a Victorian drawing by John T. Blight, showing 'St Keyne's well before the disappearance of its famous three trees.'
John Michell writes:
"Halfway between the station and the village church, on the left of the road, is the once famous well of St Keyne's"........; "the nearby cottages and the trees which shaded it are no more.
The remarkable property of the well is to give to the first of any couple who drinks its water the upper hand in marriage." ....
"St Keyne was a fifth-century champion of women's rights. She was extremely beautiful, and on her missionary and miracle-working journeys she was much harassed by amorous men. The 'strength of her purity', however, preserved her from injury and insult. When she retired to a spot in the valley near her well, she endowed the water with its peculiar virtue in order to assist brides to prevail over their husbands."

A delightful well, in the pretty countryside a couple of miles from Duloe Stone Circle. Landscaping undertaken in the 1930's is sympathetic and pleasing. Nearest train station is St Keyne, on the Looe Valley Line. Well worth a visit.
