I visited this site on 12th February 2006. It's looking better than it has done but according to the sign, access to this site will end in 2014! A damaged stone at Grey Croft, I’m no expert on the rate of weathering of stone but the damage looks recent to me with only limited algal growth on the broken area, could this be frost damage or has something mechanical hit the stone?

What a life this one has had in the last couple of centuries, buried by a farmer in 1820, restored in 1949 only to find itself sat next to the Sellafield obscenity. Our hearts dropped heavily when we reached our goal...in the centre of the circle was a rusty old hay cart, and the stones were obviously being used as rubbing posts . I supose the farmer just thinks that the Stones are taking up his agricultural land... and doesn't give a toss !! but there is no need for such disrespect..wouldn't you have thought the HERITAGE PEOPLE would take more of an interest to protect sites from neglect??

    The nearest town is Whitehaven, and the nearest Village is Seascale. Site now much improved.
