Ancient Settlement in Placer County, California. This site, containing petroglyphs and bedrock mortars, was a settlement site at the time of European contact but has been attracting people for thousands of years. Part of a regional park, there is a small museum visitor center, wheelchair accessible trails to the prehistoric sites, and reconstructions of pithouses used by the Indians of Northern California up into the contact era of the 1700's.
The Maidu Indians of Northern California consisted on several subgroups of hunter gatherer societies. They and their ancestors, unlike peoples of the southwest and eastern North America, did not develop agriculture.
Descriptive tours are given daily.
Note: At a known site, squirrels bring up ancient artifact.
