Maen Mawr
Date Added: 15th Nov 2015
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Would like to visit

Maen Mawr submitted by AngieLake on 8th Aug 2005. This view of Maen Mawr looks north towards the even-shaped flat-topped mountain that blocks the north aspect of this lovely symmetrical valley. The larger Fan Brycheiniog mountain is out of sight to the NW of this view. Behind me is Cerrig Duon circle, overlooking the alternate E/W folds either side of the southern slopes of the valley from the semi-circular south end of this platform.

Kemp Howe submitted by nicoladidsbury on 29th Mar 2004. This is the remains of what must have been a beautiful stone circle. The stones are pink granite and have a lovely glow. Unfortunately the ambience has been shattered by the "wonderful" victorians, who built the railway on top of it.

Hafodty submitted by TimPrevett on 29th Jul 2004. The view of the 3 most damaged stones - split and fallen; the other two are standing, but have had chunks knocked out of their far faces.
This circle is not destroyed, though has been considerably damaged. 3 stones remain upright, the tallest at about 4 feet, the other 2 around 2.5 feet. 2 are fallen, and 1 has been blasted apart, and unsurprisingly now lies prostrate, with a large piece missing. Diameter is around 36 feet.

Graig Lwyd Neolithic Axe Factory submitted by TimPrevett on 8th Apr 2004. Graig Lwyd Neolithic Axe Factory sits on the extinct volcano above the North Wales coastal town of Penmaenmawr. Spectacular views abound, with panoramic views to the Tal Y Fan mountain to the south, the Great Orme to the east, and Anglesey to the west.
Access is questionable; the 'volcanic plug' from which was taken microdiorite or augite granophyre is on top of a ridge which is still being quarried on its east and north sides for rocks of different geological specifications. The outcrop can ...
