Slightly disappointed to find it not so large as I had been thinking, and also very crudely concreted into the ground.

Anne T visited on 28th Jun 2014 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 After failing to park along the narrow lanes around Keld, to see various stones in Shap Row, we finally parked outside the Fire Station on the A6 running through Shap, and followed the footpaths westward to the Googleby Stone and the partially toppled stone in Asper's Field. This is a short walk, with a couple of stiles to cross, but easy enough. I was impressed by the size of this stone, although we could discern no cup or ring marks anywhere on it. I was a bit disappointed to see this stone had been concreted into place to keep it upright!

Goggleby Stone submitted by blingo : Goggleby stone near Shap. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A 2.3m high stone originally part of the Shap processional avenue, the Goggleby Stone is visible for miles around.

It is a little disconcerting to find the stone has been concreted into place to keep it upright, but it is nice to see the stone as it would have been, rather than lying on the ground.

Update November 2019: To see how this stone fits into the Shap Alignment, see the Stone Rows of Great Britain's entry for Shap Avenue, which includes a description, a plan of the alignment (adapted from a plan by Clare T (1978), photographs of the stones, access information and list of online resources for more information.

Part of the Shap processional avenue and supposedly on the medieval-1900CE 'coffin route' from Mardale (Haweswater) to Shap. Perhaps the medieval people were doing exactly the same as the prehistoric people?

This superb standing stone is very imposing standing on the brow of a hill in the middle of a field in my village of Shap. It could be a giants tooth to go with the giants foot nearby. I can only imagine how fantastic our village could have been if wed had all our stones and circles intact.
