Thiemblais menhir

Thiemblais menhir submitted by thecaptain on 4th Apr 2008. The entrance to Hell ? or is it just the wonderful carved Tiemblais menhir, St-Samson-sur-Rance, just a few kilometres off the ferry at St Malo? This was about 1:30pm, late March 2008, in a hazy sun, and some of the carvings on the front face can be seen. An hour or two earlier would have been better, as would a stronger sun. Can't have everything. But after a while, you "get your eye in" and more and more wonderful carvings come into view. I can see on here (with the eye of the kno...

Désertines menhir

Désertines menhir submitted by ocdolmen on 16th Aug 2009. Standing up on the place of the village, Désertines's stele is sculptured, on one of the faces of a haloed cross. Two metres tall, this christianized megalith was formerly attached to the ancient church. Quite as the menhir, the Gallic stele is a raised stone, carefully cut. The four very flat faces, have very rounded off fish bones. Of dimensions "more human" than the menhir, this stele had to symbolize the divinities of the cult of the independent Gaul, during the last centuries which precede...

Kerloas menhir

Kerloas menhir submitted by thecaptain on 23rd Jun 2006. This is the biggest standing menhir in Europe, if not the world, at nearly 10 metres tall, and has lost the top 2 metres after a lightning strike! The stone, which is not local and has been brought to this hilltop site from more than 2.5 kilometres away, has been beautifully shaped, and tapers both into the ground, and up to a point.

La Hutte aux Gabelous, Saint Mars-sur-la-Futaie, Mayenne A cracking little find this, its been 2/3rds restored and the other end left as it was found. I think a Gabelou is some sort of soldier employed to crack down on smugglers, but cannot be sure yet.
