Binghill

Binghill submitted by cosmic on 28th Mar 2004. Binghill at NJ855023 in Aberdeenshire is rated as only Grade 4 by Burl but to my non-professional eyes it is far more recognisable than Raich for example. Situated at the edge of a wood I approached it from the West over two grassy fields to find a gate into the wood.

Bieldside

Bieldside submitted by bobs on 29th Jan 2004. This burial cairn is situated slap bang in the middle of a modern housing estate and therefore has absolutely no atmosphere whatsoever. That said, it is still a good example of this type of cairn. Grid Ref: NJ883027

Friarsfield Stone Circle

Friarsfield Stone Circle submitted by cosmic on 13th Jan 2004. Friarsfield Road stone circle is still there. In the 1970s the Council (who own the land) did some landscaping and so the stones that can be seen at the site may be part of the original circle but they are not in their original positions.

Whitehill Stone Circle

Whitehill Stone Circle submitted by cosmic on 4th Apr 2004. Whitehill in Aberdeenshire at NJ 643135 is Graded as ruined but recogniseable but still appears in his Guide to Stone Circles. Recently the surrounding wood has been harvested so it can be seenin context. Only the West flanker (about 8 fett tall) and a stone in the NW corner are still standing but the general shape is obvious from the fallen stones and the cairn inside.

Log Text: You can park at Burn o'Vat Visitor Centre, grab a map and head to Little Ord Trail. You'll find this Celtic/Pictish cross fairly easily. If you follow the path further along the bank of Loch Kinord, you will spot a small island covered in trees - Crannog Island - that once was a house built on stilts over the water. If you go even further, near New Kinord are hut circles.

Log Text: Access - you can drive right up to the cemetery. The entry gate is small so people in a wheelchair won't pass through. There are six stones, two large slabs and 4 smaller ones, all next to each other attached to a inner wall of a ruined 13th-century church dedicated to a Pictish missionary, St. Fergus. The chapel is on a premises of a old cemetery.
There is an information board from Historic Scotland giving as a brief history of the stones.
The stones have been in this shelter since 1880s.
The symbols are of Pictish origins and are dated to be some 1100 years old. The symbols include mythical beasts and crosses. There is also written inscription on the side of cross slab in a scripts called ogham.

Log Text: Visited on 07/12/2019. The site is well-maintained, grass cut short and easily accessible even on a wheel chair. Easy to find, just follow google map. There is a space to park a car right at the entrance to the site. Site is next to a farm and surrounded by a farm and pastures. It was a peaceful visit.

Easter Aquhorthies

Easter Aquhorthies submitted by Umbra-man on 21st Dec 2018. Winter Solstice sunrise 2018, at 0852. I think these lines by Margaret Atwood, describe it well.... “...This is the solstice, the still point of the sun, its cusp and midnight, the year’s threshold and unlocking, where the past lets go of and becomes the future; the place of caught breath, the door of a vanished house left ajar...”

The Langstane

Date Added: 12th Dec 2019
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: Scotland (Aberdeenshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

The Langstane

The Langstane submitted by cosmic on 29th Mar 2004. The Langstane at NJ938059 is situated only 30m from one of Aberdeen's main thoroughfares at the junction of Dee Street and Lanstane Place. It is embedded into a recess at the back of a branch of a well known fastfood restaurant. It appears close to its present site on G&W Paterson's 1746 map of Aberdeen but it is suspected that it may have been part of a stone circle on the West side of the Denburn. Another stone, the Crab Stane, appears on the same map.
