Stonehenge Aotearoa

Stonehenge Aotearoa submitted by pab on 7th Jun 2012. November 2011 This is the 'Avenue' entrance to the main circle, with my 5ft marker (aka Mrs PAB) standing at the entrance for scale. There is plenty of information about the purpose and layout - but basically the various monoliths are markers of the limits of events such as the solstice or equinox. It is definitely worth visiting the website to understand the location more fully.

Steinacleit

Steinacleit submitted by pab on 22nd Sep 2011. Central cairn looking NW to the sea. The stones encircling this cairn define a significant area on this exposed hilltop. The Interpretation Panel at the car park area reports that the area has not been fully investigated or excavated, so its original usage is unclear but it offers the following suggestion: "An Ancient Farm: Are the stones the remains of a burial cairn or a stone circle? Using the limited evidence, Stenacleit is probably best interpreted as a prehistoric settlem...

Stalldon Row

Stalldon Row submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Sep 2006. The northern end of the row has 4 wonderful large (2 metres plus) stones still standing, which can be seen from miles away all over the southern moor, and look in many ways like walkers on the hilltop. Seen here looking to the north, the wild moorland stretches off into the distance.

Stall Moor circle submitted by thecaptain on 14th Aug 2006. Kiss-in-the-Ring stone circle. Seen here looking to the south, from the end of the longest known prehistoric stone row in the World. The most magnificent Dartmoor stone row can be seen from here (in reality, if not this picture), running over the top of Stalldown Barrow hill in the distance of this picture.

St. Pedyr's Well

St. Pedyr's Well submitted by cazzyjane on 4th Sep 2013. St Pedyr's Well, Treloy. There was formerly a chapel close by and the well was resorted to by the sick during the 17th century. After being left to ruin, it was restored in 1953 by the Old Cornwall Society. It is now the most wonderfully peaceful and atmospheric spot.

St Thomas's Well (Wymondham)

St Thomas's Well (Wymondham) submitted by pab on 9th Apr 2007. No-one at the Abbey seemed to be aware of the location of the Well when I visited just before Easter! I must admit though that I had not made the connection in my own head between St Thomas' Well and the fact that he Abbey is in a street called Becketswell Road..even though I had lived in the town for several years. The temporary tennant of this property (who also had heard nothing of a well) was kind enough to let me take these pictures, but it is on private land.

St Seiriol's Well submitted by pab on 9th May 2007. Site in Anglesey (Sir Ynys Mon) Walled gardens are always intriguing, and this one was an absolute haven. The English version of the plaque reads: "This well is traditionally associated with St Seirol who lived in the 6th century AD. The lower part of the well chamber and the nearby oval hut may go back to early Christian times, but the masonry above was rebuilt in the 18th century." (CADW)

St Ninian's Isle

St Ninian's Isle submitted by pab on 17th Nov 2006. St Ninian’s Isle lies off the western coast of the most southerly part of the Shetland Mainland. It is linked to the mainland by a beautiful stretch of sand (called a tombola), which locals advised us would only be covered by the sea in extreme storms every decade or so. It is an absolutely wonderful place. St Ninian’s Isle was the site of a valuable find of a hoard of ecclesiastical silver-ware in July 1958, and it was also found to have been in use through the Iron and Bronze ages. ...

The well is on private land in the garden of The Rectory. A gate guards steep steps down to a sunken path leading to the well.
