The Avenue

The Avenue

The Avenue submitted by TimPrevett on 10th Oct 2006. Looking NE along the last stretch of The Avenue. I've appended, albeit somewhat crudely, some lines to show the course of the outside of the parallel banks, and their *approximate* direction swinging off to the east. The tan line in the distance shows the line of some of the Cursus, which predates the Avenue considerably.

Alexander Keiller Museum

Alexander Keiller Museum submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2008. The door to the Barn Gallery at Avebury. The barn is kept very cool in order to preserve the structure of the 17th century building, so it only houses a few archaeological exhibits - according to the NT leaflet it 'tells the story of the landscape through a fully interactive display'. Most of the archaeology collection is in the nearby Stables Gallery. Both are covered by the same admission ticket, unless you are a member of the National Trust (in which case both galleries are free).

Cairo Museum of Egyptology

Cairo Museum of Egyptology submitted by AlexHunger on 31st Jan 2005. Cairo Museum of Egyptology Many fine exhibits are displayed in the museum. The museum contains the items from Tutankhamons tomb, and the mumy of Ramses II amng many others. It has become a little cramped over the last 100 years and there is talk of transfering most exhibits to a new museum being built at this time and only keeping items relating to the 18th Dynasty, particularly Tutankhamon and Akenaten. It is not permited to take photos inside.

Khafre's Pyramid

Khafre's Pyramid submitted by Thorgrim on 13th Feb 2005. The most awesome experience is to enter the Pyramid of Khafre at Giza. Is it just a coincidence that Giza is located exactly 30 degrees and zero minutes from the equator? (Cairo is 30 degrees 1 minute North) Just think about it - some time before 2,500 BC, the Egyptians of the Old Kingdom placed the Sphinx and the great pyramids exactly one third of the way up from the equator and two thirds of the way down from the north pole. With all that space to go at - it must have been deliberate and pro...
