Log Text: The S cairn with the hollowed out summit, resembling the cone of a volcano, is the highlight of this cluster of sites. There are fine views of Moelfre and beyond from this location.

Log Text: I visited Cerrig Pryfaid Stone Circle en route to the cairns and standing stones at Bwlch y Ddeufaen. The stones are relatively small and there are significant gaps but it is located adjacent to the path so why not visit.

Log Text: Borve Standing Stones are close to a beach track at the small community of Borve. Dun Bharpa is accessed via Borve, a worthwhile detour up to a large almost intact cairn.

Log Text: Balnacraig Cairn is on Barra, an idyllic small island in the Outer Hebrides. Balnacraig is a ruined chambered cairn on a knoll at the foot of Grianan, a substantial hill. Balnacraig Cairn has been extensively robbed leaving all but a scatter of stones and a collapsed chamber formed by large stones. The location is perhaps more impressive than the cairn itself.
A better preserved cairn Dun Bharpa can be found c. 0.5 mile NNW. I found it convenient to visit both cairns in the same trip.

Log Text: You would have thought that a tall standing stone on the roadside of a pub would be ideal. However, Pollachar Standing Stone's proximity to civilisation seem to detract from its antiquity.

Log Text: Brevig includes a handsome standing stone and a nearby broken recumbent stone. It is sited on the slopes above Brevig close to a derelict building. Look out for a cup mark at c. 3ft on the E face of the standing stone.

Log Text: When travelling to South Uist, An Carra is a must visit site. Stoneybridge Water Treatment Works has an access road off the A865 c. 600 yards before reaching Stoneybride, a small village in the middle of South Uist. There is room to park opposite the access road. Walk 0.5 miles up the road and the massive stone will appear on the L.
An Carra must be one of the largest standing stones in Scotland at 17 ft high and nearly 5 ft wide.

Log Text: When visiting an island for perhaps the only time, it is important to research all the available sites and prioritise the best sites to visit in a limited time. Cladh Hallan Settlement is easy to access with good info boards. The central round house is the best preserved.

Log Text: Barp Reineval is a largely intact massive chambered cairn c. 0.5 mile SE of Mingarry/Mingearraidh in the centre of South Uist. The stony mound has intermittent large standing stones on the perimeter, remains of a peristalith. The subcircular cairn measures c. 75 feet in diameter and 12 feet high. The chamber entrance is located on the ESE perimeter.
Directions to Barp Reineval Chambered Cairn: Take the Mingarry/Mingearraidh turn off the A865 in South Uist. After c. 0.2 mile you can park up at a Y-Junction at a cattle grid. Turn right along a narrow lane heading NW for c. 0.5 mile. Walk S across rough moorland for c. 120 yards towards an obvious stony mound, Barp Reineval.

Log Text: North Uist is a remote island but conversely Pobull Fhinn Stone Circle is relatively easy to visit. There is a road to Langass Lodge off the A867 (c. 250 yards SW of Barpa Langass Car Park). A path from Langass Lodge heads NW for c. 450 yards to Pobull Fhinn Stone Circle.

Log Text: The survival of Barpa Langais in its almost intact state is due to its location on an isolated island. It is most unusual to have a dedicated car park and path leading to a well preserved chambered cairn. Barpa Langais was a highlight on my Hebridean tour.

Log Text: When I visited Cladh Maolrithe Standing Stone I was on my way to the Callanish sites. This stone was an unplanned detour so I was not aware of the complexities of the site. Canmore suggests that this is the location of an old chapel and burial ground.

Log Text: Achmore Stone Circle resembles more a work in progress than a complete stone circle. It takes a leap of imagination to construct a megalithic site from multiple fallen stones.

Log Text: The ruined broch lies on a small island on the edge of Loch an Duna near Bragar. There is a causeway to the island c. 50 yards S of the A858. Some internal structure and outer walls are still discernible.
