Warrior's Rest

Warrior's Rest submitted by Anne T on 29th Jun 2015. A close up of the Warrior's Rest east face, but no cup marks that I can see. I wonder if the report of these cups got muddled with the Glebe Stone, just down the road, as I could see two cups on its eastern face.

Log Text: Warrior's Rest Standing Stone is a yard away from the gable end of Warrior's Rest Cottage. The cottage was unoccupied when I visited so there was no-one to ask permission.

Bencallen Hill

Bencallen Hill submitted by PaulM on 29th Oct 2002. Shiel Bridge/Bencallen chambered tomb Good navigation is needed to find this cairn as the landscape is pretty featureless (NX33779440). Luckily for us the conifers had been recently cleared. There is parking (just) but the lane is very quiet. I dived up the slope and headed in the vague general direction but struck lucky. Another strange site as the cairn cover has been robbed for drystone walls which all seemed to have been built to hem in the chamber or perhaps as sheepfolds. All t...

Log Text: Bencallen Cairn lies c. 3.75 miles E from Barr Village in S Ayrshire. It is difficult to get to but the splendid isolation of this site more than compensates. Only one large chamber of the cairn remains built into the N wall of a sheepfold. Presumably the stones from Bencallen Cairn were used in the construction of the sheepfold. The ground round about and inside the sheepfold has been deforested so it is rough and rutted.

Log Text: Finnarts Hill Enclosure is located in heather moorland on the summit of Finnarts Hill. Reeds have largely obscured the ditch surrounding the enclosure and the irregular surface of the cairn is covered in grass tussocks. Garleffin

Garleffin submitted by markj99 on 21st Jun 2019. Garleffin Stone in front garden.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Canmore ID 60935 relates the sadly familiar tale of a megalithic site destroyed by modern farming. Only 2 of the original stones remain in the garden of a bungalow called Druidslea, probably named after the stones. The standing stone in the front garden is allegedly in its original position but the second standing stone was moved to the back garden in 1991. Garleffin stones are like caged tigers in a zoo: they shouldn't be subjected to such indignity.

Log Text: Glen App Wind Farm prohibits unauthorised vehicle access but allows access on foot, bike or horse. I had left my horse and bike at home, so I had to walk up the private road to NX 065 726. Expecting that the stone was recumbent, I rummaged through the rough grass and tree stumps. Unexpectedly, I found a horizontal stone at the base of a tree on NW side of the road. Moor Standing Stone may seem to be somewhat underwhelming, but I regard finding a recumbent stone at the given Grid Reference as a successful outcome.
