Log Text: Carn Liath (Shurrery) is located on the E bank of Forss Water, c. 400 yards W of a dead-end track leading to Loch Shurrery. The terrain is uneven and marshy making the walk challenging. The unspectacular mound is grassy with a scattering of stones protruding through the surface. I would not recommend a visit.

Log Text: Carnduncan Cairn is an isolated grassy mound on the W wing of Islay. There are kerb stone on the SE Arc of the cairn and scattered stones in the centre of the cairn. It is located c. 30 yards NE of the B8018 to Sanaigmore. See main page for directions.

Log Text: Bardristane 1 Carved Stone features several cup and ring carvings on its NNW face. There is a horizontal crack with grass sprouting from it one third from the top of the panel. The cup and ring carvings are featured in the portion of the panel below the crack. In normal daylight only one deep cup and ring are visible.

Log Text: Fell of Barhullion Hillfort occupies the summit of the Fell of Barhullion. The ruined fort has an original entrance on the S flank and a prominent modern cairn and OS trig point on the N flank. Canmore ID 62757 suggests there was a construction of randomly positioned vertically embedded stones on the N and E flanks known as a Cheveux de Frise. Several vertical stones survive on the N flank.

Log Text: Cairnholy 5 Carved Stone is a horizontal panel embedded in a grassy field c. 0.5 mile N of Cairnholy Farm. It is difficult to locate without accurate GPS navigation. The horizontal slab is c. 45 yards NNW of the N end of the central rocky knoll located at NX 51628 54751. There are helpful pictures and directions on the main page.

Log Text: I found Carn Brae Carved Stone on a steep hillside c. 120 yards S of Carr Brae single track road which runs parallel to the A87 near Eilean Donan Castle. Take the right turn for Carr Brae (Viewpoint) off the A87 c. 0.4 mile N of Inverate Petrol Station. Follow the single track road for c. 1.8 miles to a lay-by at NG 8962 2463. Walk W for c. 200 yards to reach a croft on the right. Head S through rough pasture for c. 120 yards to Carn Brae Carved Stone at NG 89780 24509.

Log Text: Carragh Bhan Standing Stone is a substantial slab orientated NNE-SSW, located c. 10 yards W of the single track road from Port Ellen to Kintra Camp Site. There is a gateway to park in opposite the stone. It is well worth a short detour.

Located close to the centre of Newport in Pembrokeshire with public access. Although called a tripod dolmen four uprights exist - only two of which support the capstone (which is said to replicate the summit of Carn Ingli to the south).
Excavations have revealed cremated bone, Beaker and Grooved ware sherds.

Log Text: Carreg Coetan Arthur Dolmen is enclosed by a hedge in Newport. It's survival in an urban development is against the odds so the existence of this small dolmen should be celebrated.

Log Text: Despite the narrow single track road to Cashtal yn Ard and difficult parking this ancient monument is a must visit. I approached Cashtal yn Ard from the SE passing by a ruined cottage. It is one of the most impressive multi-chambered cairns I have ever seen. On my visit the site was well maintained. I was lucky to have half an hour alone with these intriguing stones in good weather.

Log Text: More than 10 years have elapsed since my visit to Castallack Carn Standing Stone. It is located at SW 44740 25374, between Castallack Round and an abandoned quarry. GPS navigation and persistence are required to find this stone hidden in shrubbery.

Log Text: One of my pet hates is a footpath off a narrow lane with no parking available. A footpath starts at Castallack Farm on a narrow Cornish lane. I parked carefully opposite the footpath in front of 2 houses. Follow the footpath NW for c. 350 yards to Castallack Round: depending on the season the SE entrance may be blocked by vegetation.

Log Text: Castallack Standing Stone is in a field c. 150 NE of Castallack Farm. There is a narrow passing place c. 100 yards NE of Castallack Farm where careful parking is possible. A gateway opposite leads into a field. Castallack Standing Stone is c. 50 yards ENE of the gateway.

Log Text: I found this recumbent stone when visiting the nearby standing stone but was unsure of its antiquity. It looks like a naked capstone but there are no other stones in the vicinity and the ground is flat. I think the stone is too heavy to be moved so it is probably in its original position.

Log Text: Thetford Castle is an amalgam of an ancient Iron Age fort built in c. 450 BC and a less ancient Norman Motte and Bailley constructed in c. 1075 within the Iron Age Outer Rampart & Ditch defences. The best view of the Iron Age remains is from the summit of the central mound.

Log Text: Hillforts are one of my least favourite type of sites: it takes time and effort to investigate all the humps and hollows. Castle O'er Hillfort is no exception. I arrived at a satisfactory understanding after an hour of wandering up and down.

Log Text: It is some kind of miracle that these cup carvings were discovered in a rocky field c. 0.5 mile N of Bardristane Farm: Maarten van Hoek was systematically searching for Rock Art on Bardristane in 1993 when he found these eroded cup carvings. They are unimpressive but they exist as remnants of ancient people.

Log Text: Cairnholy 13 Carved Panel is located on a rock outcrop c. 10 feet from a stone wall on the W margin of a large field c. 0.5 mile N of Cairnholy farm. It is c. 130 yards SE of a natural knoll in the centre of the field. There are multiple carved panels of varying quality on this location. Cairnholy 4,11-15 Carved Panels are all listed separately on TMP.

Log Text: Cairnholy 15 Carved Panel is probably the the least impressive of all the panels on this rocky outcrop, however an eroded cup and ring marking and a shallow cup carving obscured by white lichen can be found on panel, c. 6 feet SE of Cairnholy 13 at the SE foot of the knoll.
