Log Text: Mynydd Cefn Amlwch is in a pastoral setting protected from livestock by a wooden fence. It is a classic tripod dolmen. I enjoyed the quiet ambience of the site.

Narrator Brookhead Cairn

Narrator Brookhead Cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 22nd Nov 2010. This is a big old cairn about 20 metres in diameter, and up to 2 metres high.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Narrator Brookhead Cairn is a different animal to the kerb cairn on the WSW end of Down Tor Stone Row. It is a substantial mound retaining a covering of original stones. It is probable that it has been robbed to construct the enclosure c. 75 yards WSW. There is an intriguing recumbent stone c. 6 feet long located c. 15 yards NW of the cairn.

Narrator Brookhead Enclosure

Date Added: 30th Aug 2025
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 29th Nov 2017. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 2

Narrator Brookhead Enclosure

Narrator Brookhead Enclosure submitted by TheCaptain on 21st Nov 2010. There is an opening in the southeastern part of the walling, marked with large upright slabs, and facing directly towards the large cairn.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The mystery of this enclosure is increased by its proximity to several cairns and a stone row. The quiet isolation of the site is in contrast to the importance of this area in the Bronze Age as suggested by multiple sites and settlements.

Nether Largie South

Nether Largie South submitted by Fairycake on 26th Sep 2020. Looking towards the cairn from the south with the large cist in the foreground. This is by far the biggest cist I have seen. There are several inserted into earlier monuments near to here, apart from this, showing these sites continued to have significance over a long period of time.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The central chamber of Nether Largie South Cairn is the most impressive aspect of this monument.

Nether Largie standing stone

Nether Largie standing stone

Nether Largie standing stone submitted by caradoc68 on 18th Aug 2012. This standing stone is in the middle of a field, a short distance of the footpath. The farmer does not like you being there and might put a angry looking bull in the field to put visitors off. Cant find a lot written about this stone or why it seems to be leaning at 45 degrees and pointing to the southeast.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Nether Largie standing stone is one of the minor sites to visit in Kilmartin Glen. However, it is only a short detour from Nether Largie Stone Row.

Nine Stones (Altarnun)

Nine Stones (Altarnun) submitted by stonedowser on 1st Feb 2002. The circle at Altarnun is right out on the open moor and there is an excellent cairn circle not too far away, (if you can find it). As far as dowsing goes it is quite straightforward
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The flatness of the moor and the splendid isolation of Nine Stones (Altarnun) enhance this stone circle. One of the best sites in Cornwall!

North Cairn (Cairn Hill)

North Cairn (Cairn Hill)

North Cairn (Cairn Hill) submitted by markj99 on 19th Oct 2022. E Half of North Cairn (Cairn Hill).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The location of North Cairn (Cairn Hill) on the summit of Cairn Hill is an obvious choice, given the 360° panoramic views from this modest hill. The other notable point is the destructive addition of a stone wall across the cairn.

Overton Hill barrow cemetery

Overton Hill barrow cemetery submitted by Humbucker on 26th Dec 2017. Overton Hill Barrow Cemetery. A fantastically atmospheric place to visit, especially during the winter months when most other visitors tend to stick to Avebury or The Ridgeway itself.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The northernmost tumulus is marked on the horizon by a crown of trees. There is a path off the Ridgeway leading directly to the barrow.

Pancake Stone, Ilkley Moor, West Yorkshire

Pancake Stone, Ilkley Moor, West Yorkshire submitted by andy_h on 15th May 2003. The Pancake Stone is a weathered outcrop, perched ominously overlooking the Cow & Calf Hotel. The top is covered in Cup and Ring marks, but is now very worn.

Log Text: Pancake Rock is located in an area rich with rock art. The multiple cup marks may not be spectacular but a visit is worthwhile.
