Four Parishes Rock

Date Added: 31st Mar 2023
Site Type: Sculptured Stone Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 15th Oct 2012. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Four Parishes Rock

Four Parishes Rock submitted by Bladup on 4th Dec 2017. Four Parishes Rock, I believe the right hand side of this stone is a slightly different colour because it was once in the ground (for a long time), therefore making this a former Standing Stone. The weathering at the other end (left) is also going in the right direction if made when stood up. Ding Dong mine is visible on the right.

Log Text: The Four Parishes Rock is obviously a recumbent standing with two crosses and indecipherable script inscribed on the stone. It is located at a crossroads in an area rich in megalithic remains. Worth a look in passing.

Log Text: Music Water Standing Stone can be seen from the road for St Eval. It is easy to park and visit via a convenient gateway. The tall irregular stone is good value for energy expended.

Garleffin

Garleffin submitted by markj99 on 21st Jun 2019. Garleffin Stone in front garden.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Canmore ID 60935 relates the sadly familiar tale of a megalithic site destroyed by modern farming. Only 2 of the original stones remain in the garden of a bungalow called Druidslea, probably named after the stones. The standing stone in the front garden is allegedly in its original position but the second standing stone was moved to the back garden in 1991. Garleffin stones are like caged tigers in a zoo: they shouldn't be subjected to such indignity.

Log Text: Castlerigg Stone Circle has four positive points.

1) Location, Location Location: it has the best views of any stone circle I have visited. The views of Skiddaw & Blencathra are awesome.
2) The stone circle is almost intact and the stones are reasonably large.
3) The remains of The Sanctuary add a mysterious dimension to the site.
4) The site is well maintained, free from vegetation.

The only negative point is it's popularity: it is unusual to get some time alone with the stones.

Log Text: When I visited Point of Buckquoy on the NW of Orkney Mainland, the causeway to Brough of Birsay was under water so I had to settle for a distant view.

Gurness

Gurness submitted by PAB on 11th Jan 2021. 4.45am, the beautiful glow lighting up the stones. Worth getting up for such an experience, only an hour's sleep lost, and so much gained! June 2016
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: In most cases Antiquarians have to mentally reconstruct sites from several stones or grassy mounds. Gurness settlement is at the opposite end of the spectrum. There are multiple layers of occupancy preserved in an extensive network of stone walls representing exterior and interior features.

Log Text: Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn is easy to access from a dedicated car park at HY 36684 12850. Cuween Hill Tomb is signed off the Old Finstown Road at HY 36889 12907. Barnhouse Settlement submitted by steveco on 24th Feb 2002. Barnhouse Settlement HY306127. Probably in use around the same time of Skara Brae.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Barnhouse Settlement is the closest habitation to the Stones of Stenness marking it as an important site. The site is easy to visit from Stenness. It presents reconstructed floorplans of multiple buildings in the settlement making it easier to imagine how the original may have looked.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Barnhouse Stone is surrounded by the Stones of Stenness, the Watch Stone and Maeshowe. This is tough company to compete with. It also implies it could be important to be erected in such an important area. The c. 10 feet tall stone slab stand in splendid isolation in an arable field c. 0.5 mile SE of the Stones of Stenness. It deserves to be visited.

Deepdale Stones

Deepdale Stones

Deepdale Stones submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Jun 2006. The surviving Deepdale stone, looking over Stenness Loch, in the direction of Brodgar, Stenness, and Maeshowe. Unstan tomb is just behind the stone on the first spur of land. This stone is about 6 feet high, but narrower than my hand.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Deepdale Standing Stone is located c. 70 yards NE of the A965 with a distant view of the Ring of Brodgar, Stones of Stenness and Maeshowe. The erect slab is not spectacular but worth a short walk for the sea view. A second stone is marked on OS Mapping but it has been removed.

Log Text: The Comet Stone is an intriguing site to visit because of its proximity to the Ring of Brodgar. It seems likely it had some relationship to the stone circle. The stone stumps on the mound add an extra layer of mystery.

Log Text: My itinerary on this day trip included the Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, Clouduhall Standing Stone, Sorquoy Standing Stone, the Tomb of the Eagles & Isbister Bronze Age house. A worthwhile day, i'm sure you'll agree.

Clouduhall Standing Stone is a handsome monument with good coastal views. It is only a 0.5 mile detour off the A961. Directions to the site are on the main page.

Isbister: Bronze Age House

Isbister: Bronze Age House submitted by LizH on 18th Nov 2004. Isbister bronze age house or burnt mound Probably a later site than the impressive tomb not far off. This was probably a boiling place, where hot stones were placed in water to cook.

Log Text: I visited this somewhat confusing site as part of the Tomb of the Eagles tour. At first sight, it looks like a domestic residence but it is though to be connected to industry.

Log Text: I have made several visits to Ballochmyle Walls however I have not returned since 2012. I hope that the erosion of the markings has not been significant. Ballochmyle is my favourite Rock Art site due to the scale and variety of markings on the panels. I hope that it has remained relatively obscure because I feel that greater popularity of the site could hasten its demise.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: There are two recumbent stones c. 33 feet S of the standing stone leading to speculation that they were part of a stone circle featuring the sole standing stone. They too small and dissimilar to the standing stone to lend credence to this proposition. They are more likely to be field clearance stones.

The Bore Stone

The Bore Stone submitted by Creative Commons on 14th Aug 2022. The 'Bore Stone', or 'Hare Stone' (from Old Scots 'heir' meaning 'army'), is built into the western boundary wall of Morningside Parish Church. It is popularly believed to have held the royal standard of James IV when the Scottish army mustered on the burgh muir before marching to Flodden in 1513. Snag is, it has no hole-socket for a flagpole and reliable evidence indicates that the royal standard was actually raised Ellemford near Duns where the main Scottish Army assembled before marching into...

Log Text: I climbed Tinnis Hill after visiting Windy Edge Long Cairn. I failed to recognise the cairn on the summit but did notice the remains of the outer enclosure at the base of the mound.
