Log Text: Bain's Hill is easy to visit with a good view over Turnberry Golf Course towards Ailsa Craig. Lunch at the Malin Court is also a good reason to stop.

Balker Moor N

Balker Moor N submitted by markj99 on 23rd Mar 2025. Balker Moor N Cairn viewed from N.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: A visit to Balker Moor N Cairn has two problems: Firstly, the route to the cairn requires walking half a mile over uneven boggy moorland and secondly, the cairn is very difficult to find. All that remains is an earth bank on the N Arc of the cairn with several kerb stones. I didn't even mention that I had a close encounter with a stag on my first visit: A large stag accompanied by around 5 hinds were within 150 yards of the S cairn, far from safety. I held my ground nervously before they moved away.

Log Text: The half mile trek to this cairn was waterlogged but I was compensated for my efforts by being 150 yards from a red deer stag and hinds (slightly nerve-wracking) and finding a cairn in moorland. It isn't the biggest cairn ever, but the overall experience was ultimately worthwhile.

Log Text: Any ancient site which can be easily visited in passing is usually a worthwhile stop. The remains of Ballach-a-Heathry are overlooked by the recent addition of wind turbines.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: When I revisited Ballach-a-Heathry Cairn it's condition was much improved. The large field clearance stones had been removed, leaving a grassy plateau sloping S-N. The perimeter of the cairn was more sharply defined with steep edges. The cairn has an irregular elongated oval footprint. It is situated c. 180 yards SW of a convenient gate with adjacent parking space.

Log Text: When I was young, the B764 Eaglesham Moor road was one of the shortest routes from Ayr to Edinburgh. In fact I climbed up to the cairn several times in my pre-antequarian days failing to recognise a cairn. The cairn is built on a natural viewpoint with an adjacent lay-by. It is therefore all the more surprising that the site has not been already posted on TMP. Since the construction of a dual carriageway to East Kilbride from the A77, the Eaglesham moor road has become a cycle-friendly scenic alternative route to East Kilbride. It is altogether a more peaceful place to linger now.

Ballagory Horned Cairn

Ballakelly

Ballakelly submitted by Kammer on 23rd Apr 2004. Ballakelly (SC321719) viewed from the south, with prone slabs in the foreground, the chamber behind them, and the orthostat to the right. Taken 27th August 2003.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Ballakelly Chambered Cairn is in a field on the right hand side of the A25 from Douglas. There is a narrow gate to park in on a sharp corner at Ballakelly Farm. The stones are surrounded by a fence with a gate for access. The chamber and its immediately surrounding stones are impressive but the random circle of stones on the fence perimeter dilute the authenticity of the site.

Ballinaby

Ballinaby

Ballinaby submitted by Andy B on 13th Jun 2011. Standing Stone Near Ballinaby This tall stone is clearly visible from the road to the north of Loch Gorm, but is hidden from view on the path leading in from Saligo Bay. It's worth the walk. There's a second smaller stone in the next square, just visible in the left-hand side of this shot below a rocky outcrop. Copyright Mary and Angus Hogg and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Licence.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Ballinaby 1 is unsignposted off a minor road N of Loch Gorm. There is a lay-by c. 200 yards W of Ballinaby farm. Walk up the farm road to a gate, head NNW towards a junction of dry stane dykes. Ballinaby 1 is c. 50 yards SW from here adjacent to the N side of the dyke. Ballinaby 2 lies c.350 yards NNE of Ballinaby 1 across rough ground.

Ballinaby 1 is one of the most striking standing stones I have ever visited. The apparent fragility of this tall thin slab is belied by its survival despite being exposed to Islay's wild weather for millennia.

Ballinaby 2 is less impressive in its current state though it may have been as tall as Ballinaby 1 originally.

Log Text: I have made several visits to Ballochmyle Walls however I have not returned since 2012. I hope that the erosion of the markings has not been significant. Ballochmyle is my favourite Rock Art site due to the scale and variety of markings on the panels. I hope that it has remained relatively obscure because I feel that greater popularity of the site could hasten its demise.

Ballymeanoch Kerb Cairn

Date Added: 8th May 2021

Ballymeanoch Kerb Cairn

Ballymeanoch Kerb Cairn submitted by caradoc68 on 11th Dec 2011. NR 83395 96429, Kerb cairn, Ballymean. Kilmartin Glen is a very interesting area in Argyll rich in Archaeology. This Kerb cairn in know exception, being on private land the farmer has kindly fenced it off with pubic access to severely Neolithic/Bronze age features in this field.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Antiquarians are spoiled for choice in Kilmartin. Ballymeanoch complex is a worthwhile visit consisting of a kerb cairn, stone row, a stone pair and a henge. It requires some time and exploration to make sense of the complex. The concentration of sites in a small area implies that Ballymeanoch was important to the ancient people.

Log Text: Ballynaugton cairn lies in rough ground c. 0.75 miles NW of Lagavulin Distillery. The track from Lagavulin Distillery car park heading NW leads to Lagavulin Cairn, Druim Mor Standing Stone, Achnancarranan Stone Row and Ballynaughton Cairn. The remnants of the Ballynaughton Cairn are covered in ferns but the chamber is well defined.

Balmalloch Chambered Cairn

Balmalloch Chambered Cairn submitted by mickm on 9th Jan 2005. Balmalloch, Bargrennan type chambered cairn, viewed from higher ground to the south. Like many cairns of this type, it is situated on a knoll. Note also how the cairn is silhouetted against the similarly shaped Roughlea Rig to the north. The cairn is in very good condition, surviving up to 2.5m in height, with a diameter of c.17m.

Log Text: Take the dead-end Forest Road at Blair Farm off the A714 c. 0.5 mile SE of Barrhill. Follow this narrow lane for c. 2.7 miles to Darnaconnar Farm at NX 27654 83371. There are three options from here. If you have a 4x4 you can follow the track running N from here or go by off-road bike or walk if necessary. The track is little used and overgrown in the centre. Follow the track for c. 0.8 miles to Balmalloch ruin at the end of the road. Walk NW along a path between trees for c. 120 yards to reach a forest clearing. Balmalloch Cairnfield is located c. 100 yard W from here. The area is planted with small pine trees. Balmalloch Chambered Cairn is c. 350 yards NW of this point across ditches and small trees. Make your best way towards NX 26393 84533 to reach Balmalloch Chambered Cairn.

Log Text: Balnacraig Cairn is on Barra, an idyllic small island in the Outer Hebrides. Balnacraig is a ruined chambered cairn on a knoll at the foot of Grianan, a substantial hill. Balnacraig Cairn has been extensively robbed leaving all but a scatter of stones and a collapsed chamber formed by large stones. The location is perhaps more impressive than the cairn itself.
A better preserved cairn Dun Bharpa can be found c. 0.5 mile NNW. I found it convenient to visit both cairns in the same trip.

Balnuaran of Clava (Stone)

Balnuaran of Clava (Stone) submitted by Cosmic on 6th Jan 2004. NH758446 Standing stone to East of Balnuaran of Clava Cairns - only about two hundred yards away but not on OS Map. Access is along a long straight country lane (from the East, West end blocked off) that was probably drive way to a big house - trees either side. Stone itself about six feet high.

Log Text: Canmore suggests that this standing stone is all that remains of a clava cairn. Rather than mourn the loss of a cairn, perhaps it is better to celebrate the survival of a handsome standing stone.

Log Text: This site has two strikes against it:
1) I hate sites with too many people.
2) I dislike over-restored sites.
Despite these issues the Balnuaran Clava Cairns are quite impressive if you visit out of season.
