Log Text: The stone circles are easy to find but difficult to interpret. I was able to get a reasonable grasp of the site after wandering around for half an hour. The SE Circle is more intangible than the NW Circle. The S Arc of recumbent stones adjacent to the stone wall are the key to interpreting the circle.

Log Text: It is all too easy to visit the Cairnholy Chambered Cairns instead of exploring the wider area. Somewhat belatedly, I decided to capture the Kirkdale Burn Cairn. This grassy mound is only a short walk from the Northern Chambered Cairn. Canmore lists multiple carved stones S of the cairn which I intend to investigate.

Log Text: St Medan Golf Club is one of the most scenic views in the South West. I have visited Kirkmaiden Church often before I read about the cross.
There is a new combination padlock on the railed-off church so someone must have custodial access to the church.

Knock Rock Art (1) submitted by rockartuk on 7th Nov 2002. Knock 1, Wigtownshire, Dumfries and Galloway.
Grid Ref: NX 3645 4012.
Take the small road from the A747, 1km ESE of Monreith, to Golfcourse 'The Lag'. On the right side, just after the cattlegrid, there is a rocky hillock with an Otter statue on top. The motifs are just below the statue on a small ledge. There is public access.
A single left hand spiral, 17cm in diameter and a 'grid' comprising 6 near-rectangular squares of 16 x 13 cm. It is claimed that these motifs are the nearest (12...

Knock Rock Art submitted by Gus on 12th Sep 2001. Knock Rock Art (4), Clarksburn Wood Cup and Rings
A nice motif on an outcrop in a field East of Monreith. A cup and four rings and some faint cups on a smooth surface. First reported by C. Jackson in 1978. Rock Art near the Sea; Come and See!

Log Text: I walked past this stone twice before I spotted the stone in long grass on the margin of the field. Luckily I had a bottle of water to bring out the depth of the ring mark.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: I discovered this carved rock by observing an unusually large carved cup on a stone adjacent to the SUW on the edge of Knockcraven Wood. The smooth sides and depth of the cup carving are possibly caused by a natural depression on the surface used for grinding. The bonus discovery of a smooth groove probably used for scraping increases the evidence for domestic activity.

This stone pair (one of which has sadly fallen) may also go by the name of Boreland or Clugston Burn. They are now safely penned in behind wire - the fence posts can be seen from the lane that runs to the south. At this point there is a gate for the brave which opens easily. NGR: NX35235808

Log Text: Knocknocher stone pair's proximity to White Cairn, Boreland may be significant. They are not in themselves impressive but they may have been waymarkers to the cairn. The stones are fenced off to protect them from cattle. Beef cattle are usually present in the field so caution should be exercised.

Log Text: La Table des Merchants is one of Locmariaquer's big three sites. It is only accessible via the Site des Megalithes Visitor Centre for 6 euros. To be fair, there are three impressive monuments, unrestricted visiting time and free parking so what's not to like?
La Table des Merchants is a cairn constructed in 1993 around the surviving naked dolmen for the preservation of the antiquity. It was interesting to see the carved rear stone and ceiling in the chamber. However, the new cairn reminds me of the reconstructed cairn at Newgrange. I prefer my ancient monuments unadulterated.
