Log Text: It is always surprising to me when I encounter long stone rows in moorland. This particular one has significant termini and a central cairn. The stones are relatively small but two out of three ain't bad!

There are two, main, rows at Merrivale - North and South.
The north row consists of two lines of stones, aligned east -west and nearly 200m long.
However, the two lines of stones are only about 1m apart so you can only just walk between them. It has larger stones at the west end and a blocking stone at the east.
The southern row doesn't start or finish on the same alignment, is not parallel to the northern one and was, probably, not built at the same time.

Log Text: If this was the only stone row row in the area, I would be most impressed by it. However, its southern neighbour is longer, has higher stones and a bonus central cairn.

Log Text: Cairn na Gath Long Cairn is visible on the right of the Southern Upland Way having passed N through Balmurrie Farm. Cairn Na Gath is closest to the SUW at NX 20916 67493, c. 0.67 miles N of Balmurrie. From this point Cairn na Gath is c. 400 yards E.

The Birchwood Monolith submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Feb 2020. Slightly offset from the centre, looking south east. Birchwood Boulevard (to the rear) aligns clearly from the stone and path. Log Text: Despite the lack of nearby parking this modern standing stone is well worth a visit. The massive stone is beautifully framed by a horseshoe of trees planted on an earth bank.

Log Text: Sibleyback Standing Stone is a high and handsome stone in an isolated location. It is erected at SX 24072 73838, c. 100 yards NW of a disused railway bed at the foot of Newell Tor. I walked SW from Kilmar Tor to access it. I would consider a GPS device essential to find this stone.

Log Text: Trewortha Kerb cairn is easier to find than most of the nearby cairn because it has a raised kerb of orthostats surrounding an open central cist. This is my favourite cairn on Twelve Men's Moor.

Log Text: I found this standing stone by trial & error: approaching from the W I saw the stone further up the slope. I followed a meandering path from Carfury E Standing Stone keeping the standing stone in sight through gorse and briars.

Log Text: I can never resist a standing stone on the horizon as I am driving. I will either investigate there and then or make a mental note to search for the stone later. In this case I was able to park up c. 500 yards NW of the stone at SW 3961 3310, adjacent to a track which led to Boswens Menhir. It is not a spectacular standing stone, however a 15 minute walk while driving is good exercise.

Log Text: Thetford Castle is an amalgam of an ancient Iron Age fort built in c. 450 BC and a less ancient Norman Motte and Bailley constructed in c. 1075 within the Iron Age Outer Rampart & Ditch defences. The best view of the Iron Age remains is from the summit of the central mound.

Log Text: Despite the narrow single track road to Cashtal yn Ard and difficult parking this ancient monument is a must visit. I approached Cashtal yn Ard from the SE passing by a ruined cottage. It is one of the most impressive multi-chambered cairns I have ever seen. On my visit the site was well maintained. I was lucky to have half an hour alone with these intriguing stones in good weather.

Log Text: Meayll Hill Stone Circle / Chambered Cairn is a unique monument. It is apparently 6 double cist chambers arranged equidistantly on the perimeter of a circle. A visit is strongly recommended.

Log Text: Ballagory Horned Cairn is easy to visit. It is situated beside a minor road with a lay-by, surrounded by a low stone wall. There is a style to climb into the enclosure denying disabled access.

Log Text: Ballakelly Chambered Cairn is in a field on the right hand side of the A25 from Douglas. There is a narrow gate to park in on a sharp corner at Ballakelly Farm. The stones are surrounded by a fence with a gate for access. The chamber and its immediately surrounding stones are impressive but the random circle of stones on the fence perimeter dilute the authenticity of the site.
