(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Cairnholy 9 Carved Panel is one of the easiest Cairnholy Rock Art sites to find due to its location under a hawthorn tree in rough pasture. A cluster of cups are carved on top of a rounded stone embedded in turf.
Access to the panel can be restricted by aggressive beef cattle in the vicinity.
Caulside Burn Cairn South

Cauldside Burn Cairn South submitted by rogerkread on 1st May 2013. The thick mist began to clear just as I arrived at the cairn - invisible until 50 yards from it, which may be difficult to believe. Looking towards Cambret Hill from the top of the cairn, the largest of the visible flat stones near its base has an excellent large cup and rings. Climbing the wall/barbed wire fence between hill and cairn is the only problem!

Log Text: Caulside Burn Cairn South Cairn is located in the valley between Cambret Hill & Cairnharrow. The substantial stone mound measures c. 60 feet in diameter and 10 feet high. There is an exposed cist in a hollow on the summit of the mound. It measures c. 3 feet E-W and 2 feet transversely.

Log Text: Cauldside Burn Stone Circle is located immediately S of Cauldside Burn S Cairn. Most of the stones are small and partially hidden by moor grass. The sole exception is a slab measuring c. 4 feet high and 3 feet broad on the SSW of the circle. I was able to locate 9 other stones round the perimeter of the circle, varying from 6 inches to 2 feet high.

Chapel Finian Well submitted by kelpie on 13th Jul 2004. The well is housed in the ruins of what was a small chapel probably erected by pilgrims to the nearby home of St. Ninian.
The well was dry on my visit and there was no sign that it had been any different for some time.

Log Text: When I visited Chapel Finian there was a shallow pool of water in the stone hollow.

Creebridge Cairn submitted by PaulM on 30th Oct 2002. Creebridge cairn
This cairn is located on the outskirts of Minnigaff/Newton Stewart and is superbly preserved. It could be associated with a number of cairns in this area.
To find it drive along the B7079 from Minnigaff towards the A75 - the cairn is in a roadside clearing at NX41706560 and stands at least 4m tall. The noticeboard is informative.

Log Text: I had driven past Creebridge Cairn many times before I became aware of its existence: it is screened from the road by vegetation and street furniture. There is no signage marking this ancient monument. The grassy mound is relatively intact.

Grey Man of the Merrick submitted by markj99 on 27th Oct 2020. Grey Man of the Merrick Close-Up
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: The Grey Man of the Merrick is an unusual rock site in a valley c. 1 mile SE of the summit of Merrick, the tallest hill in the Galloway Forest. There are multiple routes available but I have walked my route twice: the path is relatively obvious for most of the route and there are good landmarks confirming accurate navigation. The Grey Man of the Merrick is located on a rockface at the top of a valley. The illusion of the bearded man requires an eastern view across the rock face looking towards Benyellary. Directions to the Grey Man are available in the main page.

Log Text: I accessed the Devil's Bowling Green from the public road to Loch Trool. The walk is 9 miles there and back over boggy and rough ground so should be properly planned. Walking directions are available on the main page.
Drannandow Chambered Cairn

Drannandow Chambered Cairn submitted by rogerkread on 1st May 2013. Drannandow chambered cairn showing its proximity to Napper's Cottage.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Drannandow Chambered Cairn is located c. 50 yards NNW of Nappers Cottage in the Moor of Drannandow. The long cairn has been extensively robbed on the E half leaving only an exposed chamber orientated E-W. The W half has scattered stones and remains of 4 lateral chambers in varying states of preservation. It is likely that Nappers Cottage was constructed from robbed cairn stones.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Rorie Gill's Cairn is located c. 200 yards S of Drannandow Chambered Cairn in open moorland. The centre of the cairn has been robbed out leaving an exposed cist. There is a hollow in the SW arc which may be the remains of a second cist.

Drannandow S submitted by markj99 on 21st Jul 2021. Shepherd's Cairn in centre of Drannandow S Cairn viewed from S.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: It is a general rule of thumb that the impressiveness of a site is inversely proportional to the difficulty in reaching the site: Drannandow Chambered Cairn, a relatively well-preserved long cairn, is reached by a c. 2 mile walk along reasonable tracks and Drannandow S Cairn requires a further 600 yards detour S over rough moorland to a small grassy mound topped by a shepherds cairn.

Droughduil Mote submitted by andyturner on 9th Apr 2004. NX148567
Dunragit, by Stranraer, Dumfries & Galloway.
Originally thought to be the earth mound of a 12th century castle, recent excavation has now shown the Mote to be contemporary with an adjacent system of three massive concentric timber circles dated approx 2500 BC.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: I have known about Droughdool Mote for most of my life since I live locally. It was always considered as a motte until the early 2000's: a archaeological dig in Dunragit uncovered 3 timber circles parallel to the A75. It also excavated Droughdool Mote, producing an unexpected construction date of c. 2500 BC, contemporaneous with the timber circles. The man-made mound may have provided a overview of the now destroyed timber circles.

Log Text: While I was travelling back home from John O' Groats, I decided to revisit South Yarrows Archaeological Trail with a fresh eye, having 10 years of antiquarian meanderings under my belt. I found that I understood more details of the sites on my revisit. South Yarrows Archaeological Trail is thoroughly recommended!
