Log Text: It takes some imagination to strip away the trees and whins however this small fort still retains a double rampart and ditch round a small enclosure. It is only 200 yards from a gateway c. 0.25 miles W of Twynholm.

Log Text: The path to the Cradle Stone starts at the car park at NN 8639 2260 on the SW edge of the woods leading to the Knock of Crieff. Take a path leading NE for c. 140 yards to reach a crossroads. Take the right path for c. 100 yards then turn right downhill for c. 50 yards. The cradle stone should be visible on the right in the trees.

Log Text: It is often difficult to park up in the vicinity of monuments close to busy roads. Luckily , in this instance there are 2 lay-by's at the junction of a minor road signed for Balloch with the A822 heading S out of Crieff at NN 8580 2012. Walk across the A822 to a gate into a field. Dargill Standing Stone is located c. 110 yards SE of the gate.

Clach Ossian submitted by hamish on 17th Oct 2005. It took a large company of General Wades soldiers to move this out of the way of the road building. A cist with ashes and bones was found under it.

Log Text: There is a passing place at NN 8952 3051 on the A822 to park up carefully. There is a gateway E of the passing place into a rough field. Clach Ossian is c. 90 yards N of the gate.

Log Text: Head for Fortingall. Cross the Lyon Bridge c. 0.5 miles W of Fortingall. There is a large passing place c. 300 yards later on the R with room to park up. Walk back c. 100 yards to a gateway. Walk c. 300 yards SSE across the field to see Bridge of Lyon Standing Stones on the edge of an adjacent field. The stones, one standing and one broken and recumbent are within c. 130 yards of the River Lyon.

Walk back c. 100 yards to a gateway. Walk c. 200 yards ESE across the field to see Lyon Bridge Cairn, a small dimple in a flat field. The recumbent stone on the NE edge of the cairn has multiple cup marks. It looks out of place on a small ring cairn. Its original purpose is uncertain.

Log Text: This ruined cairn can be found by parking at Cambret Hill just above the cattle grid on the road to the Cambret Hill mast. Head downhill towards the summit of Cairnharrow opposite. Cauldside Cairn South, a large well preserved cairn will be visible half way up Cairnharrow across the valley. Cross the fence at the bottom of Cambret Hill and line up the summit of Cairnharrow with Cauldside Cairn South.
You should see a green area, a reed bank, stand out from the brown moorland around 100 yards straight ahead. The ground is boggy up to the cairn. The ruined cist is surrounded by reeds and an earth bank.

Log Text: While visiting the Cauldside Burn Cairn North I looked for the two stones first using GPS, then by grid searching the area S of the cairn. This was difficult due to tussocks of heather and uneven ground. I found no substantial stones in a 30 yards by 30 yards area.

Log Text: It is ironic that this four-poster is located next to the cemetery on the SE of Dalginross: according to trove.scot/place/24857 an urn filled with ashes was found in the site in the 1800's. It is listed as dunmoid, Dalginross in trove.scot.

Log Text: The Machermore cairn should be called Culroy Cairn as it is on Culroy farmland. A Canmore search for Culroy will find these cairns.
The cairn is almost perfectly preserved except for some exposed stones on the E flank. It's location in a flat field elevates this cairn into my top 10.
I found the cairn to the E, however it is covered by whins and in a poor condition.
Culroy White Cairn lies 100 yards of the Y junction at Culroy farm around 1/2 mile up the road.
I have plans to revisit to sort out the remaining cairns. Canmore's 1911 visit seems to have been over enthusiastic in it's cairn nominations.

Originally thought to be the earth mound of a 12th century castle, recent excavation has now shown the Mote to be contemporary with an adjacent system of three massive concentric timber circles dated approx 2500 BC.

Log Text: I have known about Droughdool Mote for most of my life since I live locally. It was always considered as a motte until the early 2000's: a archaeological dig in Dunragit uncovered 3 timber circles parallel to the A75. It also excavated Droughdool Mote, producing an unexpected construction date of c. 2500 BC, contemporaneous with the timber circles. The man-made mound may have provided a overview of the now destroyed timber circles.

This standing stone is marked on the OS Explorer Map 311 (Wigtown, Whithorn & The Machars) and can be found in the drystone wall flanking the A714 and directly opposite the house called Ashleigh in Bladnoch. The whisky distillery is only a short stagger away.

Log Text: The stone lies opposite no 18 in Bladnoch main street. It is an irregular stone prominent above the regular wall. It's true nature can be seen from the field side of the wall where the breadth of the stone is visible. There is an entrance into the field c. 75 yards W of the standing stone.

This stoney cairn can be seen at NX35665800 just NE of a property called Spittal Croft (the cairn maybe called something different locally). It is located at a road junction. It is one of a cluster of monuments in the area including another cairn (White Cairn) a fort and a stone pair.

Log Text: It is easy to park at a road junction just beyond Spittal Croft Cairn. The low circle in the flat pasture is not spectacular but it was obviously more impressive before its near destruction. Sometimes it is better to to have a footprint of a cairn than an over-reconstructed monument.

This stone pair (one of which has sadly fallen) may also go by the name of Boreland or Clugston Burn. They are now safely penned in behind wire - the fence posts can be seen from the lane that runs to the south. At this point there is a gate for the brave which opens easily. NGR: NX35235808

Log Text: Knocknocher stone pair's proximity to White Cairn, Boreland may be significant. They are not in themselves impressive but they may have been waymarkers to the cairn. The stones are fenced off to protect them from cattle. Beef cattle are usually present in the field so caution should be exercised.
