The three parallel rows run off down the hillside from the cairn in an easterly direction, for a distance of at least 140 metres. Each of the rows has a large slab placed across the rows at its end by the cairn. The rows are not straight, and curve slightly south and then to the north down the hill.
A smashing place to while away some time.

Log Text: It is quite a steep walk up Cosdon Hill to this outstanding triple stone row. The stones are not very tall but this impressive monument is well worth a visit. The cairn at the W end is ruined but there are remains of a double cist in the centre.

Log Text: The Cuckoo Rock is not easy to find, requiring a c. 1 mile walk from Norseworthy Bridge Car Park at Burrator Reservoir. The natural boulder is located on the W slope of Combshead Tor in a rock outcrop. Cuckoo Rock is the tallest stone in this outcrop reaching c. 20 feet high narrowing to a point at the summit. There are possible cup marks carved on the W face of the boulder. Directions to the stone are available on the main page.

Down Tor cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 21st Nov 2010. About 50 metres to the northwest of the beautiful cairn circle, around the edge of the hillside, is the remains of another cairn, 14 metre diameter and more than a metre high. There are no signs of any kerb stones or structure within the cairn.

Log Text: It would be easy to miss this ruined cairn due to its proximity to the more impressive cairn on the WSW end of the stone row: it's always a good idea for antiquarians to investigate any suspicious mounds to avoid missing out.

Log Text: The majority of the stones are not tall but this stone row set in isolated moorland has a tremendous presence in this bleak landscape. It is the pick of the multiple sites concentrated in this area.

Log Text: The mystery of this enclosure is increased by its proximity to several cairns and a stone row. The quiet isolation of the site is in contrast to the importance of this area in the Bronze Age as suggested by multiple sites and settlements.

Log Text: Narrator Brookhead Cairn is a different animal to the kerb cairn on the WSW end of Down Tor Stone Row. It is a substantial mound retaining a covering of original stones. It is probable that it has been robbed to construct the enclosure c. 75 yards WSW. There is an intriguing recumbent stone c. 6 feet long located c. 15 yards NW of the cairn.

Log Text: The burial chambers have been artfully placed in the rectory garden in Avening, however, in principle I do not agree with people removing parts of an ancient monument for their own gratification. The original site is devalued and the new site is questionable at best.

Log Text: There is no logical reason that the amount of effort required to reach a site should affect your interpretation of the site. However I have found that I undervalue sites adjacent to the roadside in comparison with sites in the middle of nowhere. That said, the remains of Arthur's Stone are quite impressive.

Log Text: There is a mini roundabout on the A635 at the Clarence Hotel in Greenfield. Take the Chew Valley Road signed for Oldham A699. Follow the A669 for c. 0.3 mile. Take the Kinders Lane right turn opposite the King William IV Hotel. Follow Kinders Lane for 0.4 mile then bear left onto Haw Clough Lane. Stay on Haw Clough Lane for 0.3 mile to reach Knowl Top Farm. There is room to park opposite the start of Pots and Pans Path. It is c. 500 yards up a hill to the Pots & Pans Stone.

Log Text: Robin Hood's Stone is the definitive example of an anachronism, a standing stone in an urban environment. The green iron railings which imprison the standing stone emphasise it's alienation.

Log Text: Home Covert Tumulus is easy to visit from a lay-by on the A1066. The tumulus is also known as Boudicca's Grave, one of several sites around Southern England claiming to be Boudicca's last resting place.

Log Text: Thetford Castle is an amalgam of an ancient Iron Age fort built in c. 450 BC and a less ancient Norman Motte and Bailley constructed in c. 1075 within the Iron Age Outer Rampart & Ditch defences. The best view of the Iron Age remains is from the summit of the central mound.

Stanton Drew NE Circle submitted by Horatio on 23rd Apr 2022. The NE circle the smallest of the 3 circles at Stanton Drew, includes some of the heaviest blocks of stone. Within this circle geophysics have shown that four enormous timber once once stood., it is not yet understood if these where buildings, raised platforms or some other form of ceremonial structure.
