Achnancarranan

Achnancarranan submitted by SandyG on 5th Jan 2018. View from the south west (Scale 1m). Views to the north are restricted by rocky outcrops.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Achnancarranan Stone Row is one of several sites on or near the track which lead N out of the track beside Lagavulin Car Park. Lagavulin, Druim Mor, Achnancarranan and Ballynaughton can all be accessed from this point for a c. 3 mile walk mostly on a farmtrack. I did encounter the problem of Beef Cattle occupying Lagavulin Stone and the track through the field.

Log Text: Ardilistry Four Poster is in imminent danger of becoming Ardilistry Three Poster. The W stone was only protruding c. 1 inch above the surface on my visit. I wonder how much of Ardilistry Four Poster lies below the marsh? Going, going, gone: Don't leave it too long!

St Nem's Churchyard (Kilnave)

St Nem's Churchyard (Kilnave) submitted by Sunny100 on 12th Aug 2010. Site in Isle of Islay Scotland. The 8 foot high-cross, dating from the 8th century CE, in St Nem's kirkyard. The cross is very worn and one arm is broken.

Log Text: Kilnave Chapel was a bonus on my way to Ardnave Loch Crannog. I am not particularly attracted to graveyards however the unusual cross was worth the detour.

Ardnave Loch

Log Text: Unfortunately I visited Ardnave Loch during the rainy season (it runs from 1st January to 31st December) so the land around the loch was waterlogged. I would like to revisit in the dry season (if it exists).

Ballinaby

Ballinaby

Ballinaby submitted by Andy B on 13th Jun 2011. Standing Stone Near Ballinaby This tall stone is clearly visible from the road to the north of Loch Gorm, but is hidden from view on the path leading in from Saligo Bay. It's worth the walk. There's a second smaller stone in the next square, just visible in the left-hand side of this shot below a rocky outcrop. (View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Ballinaby 1 is unsignposted off a minor road N of Loch Gorm. There is a lay-by c. 200 yards W of Ballinaby farm. Walk up the farm road to a gate, head NNW towards a junction of dry stane dykes. Ballinaby 1 is c. 50 yards SW from here adjacent to the N side of the dyke. Ballinaby 2 lies c.350 yards NNE of Ballinaby 1 across rough ground.

Ballinaby 1 is one of the most striking standing stones I have ever visited. The apparent fragility of this tall thin slab is belied by its survival despite being exposed to Islay's wild weather for millennia.

Ballinaby 2 is less impressive in its current state though it may have been as tall as Ballinaby 1 originally.

Ballynaughton

The track from Lagavulin Distillery car park heading NW leads to Lagavulin Cairn, Druim Mor Standing Stone, Achnancarranan Stone Row and Ballynaughton Cairn. The remnants of the Ballynaughton Cairn are covered in ferns but the chamber is well defined.

Log Text: Carragh Bhan Standing Stone is a substantial slab orientated NNE-SSW, located c. 10 yards W of the single track road from Port Ellen to Kintra Camp Site. There is a gateway to park in opposite the stone. It is well worth a short detour.

Log Text: There are two strikes against Coille A'chnoic Mhoir Standing Stone: its name is hard to spell and difficult to pronounce. On the plus side it has fantastic views and is accessible from the path to Frachdale Chambered Cairn.

Cragabus

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: A standing stone with a good coastal view turns out to be a more complicated site: a chambered cairn was robbed to construct an overlaid stone building, leaving an exposed orthostat on a low grass mound.

Borvemore

Date Added: 1st May 2025
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment Country: Scotland (Isle of Harris)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jul 2012. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Log Text: There are two recumbent stones c. 33 feet S of the standing stone leading to speculation that they were part of a stone circle featuring the sole standing stone. They too small and dissimilar to the standing stone to lend credence to this proposition. They are more likely to be field clearance stones.

Achara Standing Stone

Achara Standing Stone submitted by caradoc68 on 19th Jan 2012. NM 9866 5455, Achara Standing Stone. Not far from the road but can be quite difficult to see. This stone stands alone in a field and is a joy to see, has it is just over 12 feet in hight you feel quite dwarfed standing next to this huge stone.
