Log Text: Chun Quoit is my favourite dolmen in Cornwall due to its almost perfect location on elevated moorland with panoramic views. My walking route started in the car park off the B3318 at SW 3934 3336. The path heads E then N for c. 1 mile to Chun Quoit. My route is viewable on Chun Quoit & Castle.

Colquite Menhir

Date Added: 9th Jul 2025
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 11th Apr 2018

Colquite Menhir

Colquite Menhir submitted by TheCaptain on 7th Dec 2010. The stone is nearly 6 feet tall in a little enclosure type area where the walls go around it, which would seem unusual for many reasons.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I passed by Colquite Standing Stone on the way to East Moor Cairns and Nine Stones of Altarnun. It certainly appears to be an ancient stone repurposed as a gate stone at one point. The fact that the stone wall detours around it emphasises its significance.

Condolden Barrow

Condolden Barrow submitted by thecaptain on 17th Nov 2008. Legend claims this to be the final resting place of Cador, a 6th century King of Cornwall and one of Arthur's knights. Viewed here from the east

Log Text: I visited Condolden Barrow in an unusually dry spell: the mound was badly eroded especially on the summit.

Craddock Moor stone row submitted by thecaptain on 13th Nov 2009. The stones are spaced nice and evenly at just over one metre from each other, and the row is nice and straight.

Log Text: In common with many Cornish Sites, it is difficult to park close to Crousa Common Stones. The closest safe parking stot is a picnic spot at St Keverne Beacon, 100 yards off the B3293. My walking route to the stones is viewable on Crousa Common Stones/a>.

Log Text: I agree with The Captain that the site could be a ruined dolmen: there are multiple large recumbent stones in the vicinity of the standing stone.

Log Text: I was curious to investigate the Devil's Jump marked on the OS Map close to Carweather Medieval Village. The natural rock feature consists of two granite crags in a wooded valley. I couldn't find out much information on the net. The biggest surprise was a slab of rock resembling a bearded devil on the S crag.

Stannon cairn

Stannon cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 27th Mar 2005. Cairn circle just east of Stannon Circle on Bodmin Moor. View looking south westwards at this cairn circle which I found while walking back to my car from Fernacre. A fine set of teeth it has.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: If you are visiting Stannon Stone Circle why not walk c. 400 yards ESE to locate Stannon Kerbed Cairn, a small cairn with 4 prominent kerb stones and a possible undisturbed cist in the centre?

Aspers Field

Date Added: 16th Apr 2021
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: England (Cumbria)
Visited: Yes on 28th Dec 2013. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Aspers Field

Aspers Field submitted by baz on 26th Apr 2003. This stone (at NY558152) lies in the next field to the more well known Goggleby Stone (NY559151), from which I took this picture (with zoom). Both of these stones form a part of the Shap Stone Avenue.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I have mixed feelings about the Shap stones. I am grateful for the stones that have been preserved but I regret that Shap Avenue has been effectively dismantled. I would love to have seen the avenue as it was meant to have been seen.

The Galloway Stone

The Galloway Stone

The Galloway Stone submitted by Anne T on 3rd Apr 2017. Looking south east over the Galloway Stone to the hills beyond.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It nice to find a site that you don't have to walk 3 miles over moorland to visit.
The Galloway Stone is just such a site. Simply leave the M6 at Shap, turn L for Orton, then take the R turn to Salterwath just before the M6 underpass.
The Galloway Stone lies c. 50 yards to the L after 150 yards along this lane.
It looks like a large chunk of Shap Pink Granite so it can't be an erratic from Galloway.
The explanation for it's name may be that it was a marker on the Old Scotch Drove Road for turning onto the Galwaithegate or Galloway Road.
As an additional point of interest there is an Ordnance Survey Bench Mark Bolt on The Galloway Stone denoting a height of 98.8m.

Gamelands

Date Added: 20th Jul 2022

Gamelands

Gamelands submitted by drolaf on 15th Aug 2020. View of Gamelands from just up the hill. From here you can also still see the cairns at Raisbeck.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This ruined stone circle has a presence greater than its physical footprint. It has no typical standing stones but the N half is well delineated as is the S Arc. The location reminded me of Drummore Stone Circle near Kirkudbright however the remains of Gamelands Stone Circle are more impressive.

The Giant's Foot (Cumbria)

After c. 50 yards the path continues SW across a field for c. 120 yards to a junction of dry stane dykes. The path turns SE along a dry stane dyke for c. 50 yards to reach the substantial recumbent Giant's Foot stone.

Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle

Date Added: 5th Mar 2023

Visited: Yes on 19th Feb 2023. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 5

Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle

Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle submitted by baz on 3rd May 2003. Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle (NY587155). Ten stones form this small stone circle which is now huddled up against a drystone wall, in a field with a locked gate. On the other side of the wall, there appears to be a stone row.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle is easy to visit, located adjacent to a minor road to Orton near Shap. This small stone circle consists of an assortment of rounded stones. Despite its stature this site is well worth a visit.
