Achara Standing Stone

Achara Standing Stone submitted by caradoc68 on 19th Jan 2012. NM 9866 5455, Achara Standing Stone. Not far from the road but can be quite difficult to see. This stone stands alone in a field and is a joy to see, has it is just over 12 feet in hight you feel quite dwarfed standing next to this huge stone.

Achavanich

Achavanich submitted by dodomad on 5th Oct 2020. Ava, an abbreviation of Achavanich, the area where she was originally discovered in 1987 in a rare rock-cut tomb in the county of Caithness, was originally presented with a mane of red waves and blue eyes. The team behind Ava’s first coming out have issued a retraction of sorts in the form of an updated facial reconstruction—new DNA analysis shows that Ava had straight black hair, brown eyes and that her family were relatively recent migrants to Great Britain when she died. From the Achav...

Log Text: Achavanich is one of the most impressive sites in Scotland. It's unique U-shape adds a layer of intrigue to an already brilliant site.

Log Text: Achmore Stone Circle resembles more a work in progress than a complete stone circle. It takes a leap of imagination to construct a megalithic site from multiple fallen stones.

Log Text: There are some sites which are overwhelming. There is too much to see on just one visit. The wealth of rock art on display at Achnabreck almost requires a revisit to appreciate how special it is.

Log Text: Achnancarranan Stone Row is one of several sites on or near the track which lead N out of the track beside Lagavulin Car Park. Lagavulin, Druim Mor, Achnancarranan and Ballynaughton can all be accessed from this point for a c. 3 mile walk mostly on a farmtrack. I did encounter the problem of Beef Cattle occupying Lagavulin Stone and the track through the field.

Log Text: Alignement de Kerloquet (Manio) is somewhat underwhelming. Best viewed from the Old Windmill these stones rows appear to be the E End of Alignement de Kerlmario tailling off to small stones. It is much more rewarding to follow signs to the Geant du Manio.

Allanfearn

Allanfearn submitted by TimPrevett on 31st Oct 2006. "Allanfearn" Chambered Cairn taken as the Rapsons bus whizzes along the A96. RCAHMS appears not to list it, so any more info appreciated.

Log Text: Culloden Cairn is a ruined cairn c. 25 yards NW of the A96 near Allanfearn Farm. The obvious feature of the cairn is an erect square pillar c. 5 feet high on the S Arc. There is a jumble of large recumbent stones on the grassy surface, possibly field clearance stones.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The Bone Caves are set at the base of Creag nan Uamh in a spectacular highland glen. All of the discoveries have been removed to museums so it requires some imagination to reconstruct the caves as they were discovered. The impressive nature of the site more than makes up for this.

Allt Sgiathaig

Allt Sgiathaig submitted by markj99 on 9th Sep 2021. Elevated view of Allt Sgiathaig Cairn from E.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Allt Sgiathaig Cairn is located on a knoll c. 5 yards E of A894 on the NC500. The W arc of the cairn has been truncated by road improvement. The tussocky cairn has a jumble of stones round a ruined central cist. Perhaps its better to visit in winter or spring when the NC500 will be less busy and there will be less ferns on the cairn.

Altarnun Cross B submitted by dooclay on 11th Apr 2023. The Cross is built into a wall just past the first right leaving Altanun towards Fowey Moor
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The Short Cross is located c. 500 yards N of Altarnun at the start of a narrow lane leading to Tresibbett. I had to clear away vegetation to find the broken cross head embedded in the base of a stone wall.
