Kinblethmont submitted by golux on 28th Jun 2011. This fragment bears a crescent-and-V-rod above a "pictish beast" with part of a mirror-and-comb below (you can just see two points of the comb case below the beast's foreleg. The interior decoration of the crescent includes 2 smaller crescents. Immediately to the right of the beast, on the side face, is a rayed sun symbol which is not incised as deeply as the front face symbols (see other photo).

Friarsfield Stone Circle submitted by cosmic on 13th Jan 2004. Friarsfield Road stone circle is still there. In the 1970s the Council
(who own the land) did some landscaping and so the stones that
can be seen at the site may be part of the original circle but they
are not in their original positions.

Bourtie Pictish Stone submitted by golux on 26th Mar 2014. It can be difficult to spot this symbol stone, let alone make out any of the symbols. The side of the building in sunshine is the south side, the stone is in the second top row at the east end. I find the best view of the symbols is obtained when the sun is in the south west, as in this picture, and I dare say that the sun in the south east would be equally good.

T Hunter 1883 The tron is a rusticated obelisk with a hole near its pointed top, surmounted by a tall spike with a weather vane. The jougs are attached to its S face."
I say "weird, even creepy".

Log Text: Easy access:
From the cross-roads in the middle of the village of Oyne, follow the B9002 west for 900m then turn right (signposted "Bogandy"). As you pass the houses lined up on your left, look between them for the entrance to a track running under the railway. Follow this track, bear left when you reach Petmathen farmhouse, then follow it 700m up the hill to the field where the stone stands. As you walk up the hillside you will see the stone standing out against the slope before you, so big and square it looks man-made. A pleasant 15 minute walk from the road with no fences or walls to cross, just one or two gates.

Craigmakerran submitted by hamish on 6th Jul 2005. Go to this site after Blackfaulds, but go there by the main road. The lane from Blackfaulds farm is not for the faint hearted. The stones are at the end of an arm of Blairmuir woods and are just inside the fence. There are lots of stones in the area but only two big ones. I can't find my picture of the other one.

Broomend Stone Seat / Cists submitted by golux on 8th Jan 2012. A stone seat (at NJ 7787 1917) constructed, it is said, from the capstones and smaller stones of the cists found when the nearby access road to the mill was laid. Both this and a second seat made of cist stones (located at NJ 7783 1922) are shown on the OS map as 'stones'.

Log Text: Access: From the Inverurie by-pass (A96) take the B993 eastward into Inverurie then take the first right into Mill Road and follow this till your way is barred by the entrance to the site of the disused papermill. Walk into the mill site and look for a pair of stone gateposts on the right: this is the entrance to the woodland around an ornamental pond. Enter here (or further along the road) and head clockwise round the pond to find the large stone seat on the east bank. The two small seats are in the bank below the road.
On a sunny day this is a pleasant though neglected corner of woodland. This site was perhaps once a beauty spot but has been forgotten and left to become overgrown, unkempt, dilapidated and in some places dangerous.
Caution: a lifebelt and warning notices are posted: FLOODING, DEEP WATER, SLIPPERY BANKS.

Broomend of Crichie Avenue submitted by golux on 8th Jan 2012. Aerial view of the avenue
This map shows the orderly placing of the stones: A, B and D sit neatly on a line running due S from the henge marking the E side of the avenue, stone C is the only surviving member of the W side. A cremation burial was found at the foot of stones B and C and some "funerary urns" have also been found along the avenue. There was another stone in the E line, just to the N of stone A at NJ 7792 1960, which was removed in 1851.
The OS map also shows 2 stones ...

Log Text: Finding these 4 stones is simple: start at the henge and head due S. On a fine day, visiting them all will provide a pleasant 20 minute walk through secluded woodland. The henge is located 259m E of the intersection of the Inverurie by-pass (A96) with the B993: from this junction take the B993 into Inverurie, take the first right (Mill Road) and look for the henge in the field on your left. From the henge you will see stone A due S in the middle of the field; keep going due S for another 350m to find the other 3 stones.

Hill of Barra submitted by bobs on 29th Jan 2004. Hill of Barra Iron Age Hillfort in Aberdeenshire, which also has traces of mediaeval ridge and furrow cultivation. Access is by a track off the main Inverurie/Oldmeldrum road. The track is long and uphill all the way. Wear stout trousers if climbing to the top, because there are wicked gorse bushes all round the base, whose thorns find any way they can to scratch your legs. I know this from bitter experience! Log Text: Access by sign-posted route (1.15km): from the roundabout on the S side of Oldmeldrum where the B97170 meets the bypass, walk N as if entering Oldmeldrum and take the first right onto the surfaced road running S towards Hill of Barra; at the first house (which rejoices in the name "Blankets") take the path S through the woodland, cross the fence by the stile and continue S along the field edge; cross the footbridge, cross the fence by the stile then continue S following the fence towards the hilltop. Beware cattle and electrified fences.
(Contrary to the caption below bobs' photo, no gorse bushes are involved!)
Great views to N and W, well worth the 15 minute walk on a fine day.

Keith Hall submitted by golux on 29th May 2011. This was found in the nearby River Don in 1853. It stands in the grounds of Keith Hall (now converted into flats) on the east side of Inverurie (access via the B993). Go round to the back of the Hall (to the N side) where there is a small fenced-off area of woodland. Cross the fence and continue N across the (drained) moat to a spot 170m from the Hall.
The S side shows (from the top) a double-disc-and-Z-rod, the fish (salmon) and the mirror-and-comb.

Log Text: Access: Keith Hall lies on the east side of Inverurie; from Inverurie take the B993 east under the railway line and over the river Ury then enter the gateway on the left; follow the drive north to Keith Hall (an impressively-fronted 16th century country house now made into apartments) then go round to the back and continue north through the trees behind the house towards the site of Caskieben (former earthwork castle); cross a fence and the large dry moat and bear right; the stone sits on a small mound.

Log Text: Fine views to the south from here, it's well worth the scramble up the hill from the roadside.
From the roadside (B951), follow the fence that separates the woodland from the farmer's field, keeping on the left (woodland) side of the fence - and BEWARE the fence is electrified, it was live when I visited. You will find yourself walking between two fences which lead you to the stones; you have to cross one last fence but it is sagging and poses no problem.
When the farmer saw me he immediately came over to warn me of the electric fence; in the course of a very friendly chat he pointed out the locations of ancient settlements in a dip below Strone Hill, which loomed over our hilltop from the east.
I was surprised to find modern markings on one of the stones - see my photo.

The RCAHMS page mentions a second stone set into a wall just to the east. I wonder if that it is it on the left edge of this photo, sticking up from the wall?
