Great Oak Stone

Great Oak Stone submitted by cerrig on 8th May 2012. This is the view from the South East, on a bearing of approx. 300 degrees North West, along the very flat and dead vertical "smiley"faced Northern flank. If someone hadn't thoughtfully planted a tree in the way you would be able to see that this stone is aligned on the top of Myarth hill (not the summit), beyond this the line goes to Bwllch standing stone, out of site from here. Spookily, if you followed the line in the opposite direction it goes directly through the house I used to live in , in...

Gosforth Cross

Date Added: 29th Mar 2017
Site Type: Ancient Cross Country: England (Cumbria)
Visited: Yes

Gosforth Cross

Gosforth Cross submitted by Thorgrim on 30th Jul 2003. Probably the finest Anglo-Scandinavian carving in the north of England, this red sandstone cross has stood for over a thousand years in the churchyard at Gosforth. Depicting Pagan scenes of Odin, Thor and Loki as well as of Christ crucified, the mixed symbolism is intriguing. Inside the church are fine Viking hog-back tombstones including one showing the famous scene of Thor fishing for the Midgard Serpent. Gosforth in Cumbria is 12 miles from Whitehaven at map ref: NY 072036.

Fourknocks submitted by kenwilliams on 19th Oct 2005. An extremely wide lens fits in just about the entire chamber, taken from the short passageway. Note the carvings on the free standing stone to the right. The light is natural light from the ingeniously placed holes in the modern roofing.
