Site Type: Barrow Cemetery
Country: United States (The South)
Visited: Couldn't find on 1st Sep 2009

Windover (Florida) submitted by bat400_photo on 9th Jan 2014. "This is a peat bog accidentally discovered in 1982 which preserved the burials of native americans 7,000 to 8,000 years ago. It is located in dense woods and hard to find ... but locals who are proud of the site will help you find it."

Log Text: I drove passed this site multiple times without knowing it (while hunting for it!) Despite the pond's location directly along a paved road through a housing estate, there is no place to stop and look at the pond without walking through a private home's back garden or "bushwacking" through Florida underbrush. As described in the site listing, you are better off visiting the Brevard County History and Science Museum and asking them if any visits to the site are planned.

Log Text: See my description in the site listing. I visited very early in the morning, before any tours of the Instone house, so I am unsure if the docents or rangers provide much information about the mound or original Indian village.

Lake Okeechobee
Date Added: 12th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: United States (The South)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Oct 2008

Lake Okeechobee submitted by bat400 on 2nd Oct 2008. Lake Okeechobee. Taken from the eastern shore of the lake, north of Belle Glade. Heavy rains from the 2008 Hurricane season have increased the water levels slightly, but drought conditions still are reducing the lake depth in some areas. As you can see, Okeechobee is too wide to see the opposite shore.

Cahokia - Mound 66
Trip No.2 Entry No.10 Date Added: 30th May 2017
Site Type: Artificial Mound
Country: United States (Great Lakes Midwest)
Visited: Saw from a distance on 1st Jul 2008. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 2
Log Text: From aerial photos this is one of the larger mounds at Cahokia. And although it is not on an easily accessible footpath, it can be seen from Forest Blvd., south of the modern Cahokia park. It lies at the southern boundary of the city proper and is 430' by 170' (east-west by north-south) and 25-30 feet high.
In the early 1900's a raised road or causway could be seen extending north from this mound toward the central area of Cahokia. The causeway was more recently confirm by Lidar imaging.
The mound was excavated in the 1920's and a great unfilled trench through the mound can still be seen. This excavation was performed because it appeared that expansion by the nearby rail road was scheduled to completely level the mound. This did not occur.
The mound had been used for burials: both the ancient people of Cahokia and the more recent French colonists.

Wright-Holder Works
Date Added: 12th Sep 2010
Site Type: Misc. Earthwork
Country: United States (Great Lakes Midwest)
Visited: Yes on 6th Jan 2008

Wright-Holder Works submitted by bat400 on 6th Jan 2008. Wright Holder works. Of several earthen enclosures, only the large rectangular one may be glimpsed from the public road. Given the lay of the land and the site being under the plow, it is difficult to make out the earthen wall from ground level. The property is private, with no public parking area. Alligator Mound submitted by bat400 on 7th Dec 2007. Alligator Mound. What you cannot tell from satellite views and most photos of the site is that there would have been a clear view of the effigy from higher ground immediately to the west of the mound. In this photo you can just make out the irregular lines of the mound through the recently planted trees in the upscale neighborhood that surrounds the mound.

Newark Earthworks - Great Circle submitted by bat400 on 25th Nov 2007. Northeast of the "Great Circle" portion of the Newark complex there are earthen walls (each about 3 feet high and 6 feet wide) that lead toward the Wright Earthwork. This is one of them, looking toward the outside of the "Great Circle" itself.

Newark Earthworks - Octagon
Date Added: 12th Sep 2010
Site Type: Misc. Earthwork
Country: United States (Great Lakes Midwest)
Visited: Yes on 25th Nov 2007

Newark Earthworks - Octagon submitted by bat400 on 25th Nov 2007. This photo was taken from the observing platform that is set on the east side of the connecting "road" between the circle and octagon in the "Octagon" earthwork site. Looking southwest toward the circle. As you can see, the enclosures are far too large to get a good idea of the geometry without actually walking the site.
