Gardoms Edge Stone submitted by TimPrevett on 20th Feb 2007. This is the second time a Megalithic Meet has taken in this fine standing stone, and again it proved to be a place of prolonged focus and conversation.

Gatcombe Lodge

Gatcombe Lodge submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Jan 2010. Visited here on Boxing Day 2009 upon recommendation of my Prehistoric England guidebook from the 1970s which made no mention of Royal Estate which locals later told me about. Ruined remains of a chamber on the more eastern end of the huge long barrow mound, and what appears as quarrying / robbing damage on the north side of the eastern end. Advanced twilight by the time we got here (having watched sunset from the Long Stone just across the road) so very dark and use of flash imperative (also...

Gelli Hill Cairn A

Gelli Hill Cairn A

Gelli Hill Cairn A submitted by TimPrevett on 25th Aug 2006. The silhouette of the cairn approaching sunset. The diameter of this cairn is considerable, and I think must rank among the taller cairns I have visited. See pictures of the circle looking towards here for an idea of the size of the mound in context of the landscape.

Gelli Hill Cairn B

Gelli Hill Cairn B submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Aug 2006. This is not Gelli Hill circle, but yet more stones which could be mistaken for a ruinous circle, as per the comment on 14th August 2005. The 'real' Gelli Hill circle on a narrow neck of land, lower down more or less at the same level as the large fallen standing stone.

Gelli Hill Circle

Gelli Hill Circle submitted by TimPrevett on 29th Jul 2008. The circle as it is best located - in the angle of a boundary; this is inconsistent with the 1:25000 map, from which the boundaries have changed (as have footpaths) which can cause confusion. 28th July 2008.

Giant's Grave (Shropshire)

Giant's Grave (Shropshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 6th May 2005. What I believe to be the feature called "Giant's Grave" on the SE side of Stapeley Hill. I was not able to check it out in person - it was the other side of a field boundary; I hope to get permission and visit the site next month. This was zoomed in from the other side of the field, and based on my most meticulous map reading! The stone to the right seem to form a right angle against each other, with another stone apparently defining what could be interpreted as a chamber area. The site may be n...

Glastonbury Tor

Glastonbury Tor submitted by TimPrevett on 17th May 2006. I awoke early Sunday morning; mist hung in the streets of Glastonbury - so I *knew* that above it would be fantastic, so I got out quick, eating breakfast on the go... as I ascended the tor, the mist began thinning to give a fantastic day above. Magic.

Gop Caves

Gop Caves submitted by TimPrevett on 19th Feb 2004. The Gop Caves are surprisingly close to The Gop Cairn, from which they can be accessed. Discovered in 1886-7, the caves recess some way into the limestone of Gop Hill. On top of evidence of hyaena activity during the last Ice Age, a square enclosure had been constructed, enclosed by rubble, and contained the remains of at last 14 humans, dating across the Neolithic. Evidence of burning at high temperatures was found nearby. Usage of the caves continued for some time, with an additional 6 burial...

Graig Lwyd Cairns submitted by TimPrevett on 6th Sep 2004. The volcanic looking cairn, looking south west. This cairn does not look as big as it actually is! It is a matter of minutes walk on from Druids Circle, and certainly worth investigating. Grid Ref SH 71662 74693.

Graig Lwyd Neolithic Axe Factory

Graig Lwyd Neolithic Axe Factory submitted by TimPrevett on 8th Apr 2004. Graig Lwyd Neolithic Axe Factory sits on the extinct volcano above the North Wales coastal town of Penmaenmawr. Spectacular views abound, with panoramic views to the Tal Y Fan mountain to the south, the Great Orme to the east, and Anglesey to the west. Access is questionable; the 'volcanic plug' from which was taken microdiorite or augite granophyre is on top of a ridge which is still being quarried on its east and north sides for rocks of different geological specifications. The outcrop can ...
