Visited: Would like to visit

Llech Y Dribedd submitted by Horatio on 6th Jul 2026. Out and about yesterday, a bit tired so more driving than walking, in fact that tired I was going to do two sketches of this chamber from different angles as it was I just went with the classic view as on approach from the stile in to field. I'll leave the page opposite for the 'other view' to be done another day. This chamber is another one of those 'chunkies' I rather like. I always think the orthostat's don't fit the capstone. Either that, or the capstone's that darned heavy its pushed ea...

Log Text: Forecast for today is the best day of the week, so I have saved it for the Castleton and Mam Tor loop. I park at the National Park centre and have a quick look around at its exhibitions, which are very interesting. They have an Iron Age stone head in a display case, which was found somewhere in the vicinity.
Mam Tor Barrow
Trip No.225 Entry No.136 Date Added: 27th Oct 2026
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Derbyshire)
Visited: Yes on 19th Sep 2025. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Mam Tor Barrow submitted by TheCaptain on 1st Oct 2025. Approaching the top of Mam Tor from the southwest, and the flagstoned path takes me through the hillfort ramparts, and there on the left is a high fenced off area. This is the barrow, which is currently fenced off for protection. It doesn't look much from below, but looks much batter from above.

Log Text: Approaching the top of Mam Tor from the southwest, and the flagstoned path takes me through the hillfort ramparts, and there on the left is a high fenced off area. This is the barrow, which is currently fenced off for protection. It doesn't look much from below, but looks much batter from above. Looking in detail at the OS map, the second barrow on Mam Tor is shown at the actual summit, with its regular stream of visitors. It has been covered in cobble stones for protection with some interesting little plaques incorporated.

Log Text: Its tuning into a nice afternoon as I get to the top of Mam Tor, and which didn't seem as long and hard slog to the top as I was expecting. The views all around are excellent, and most of the iron age defences clear to see.

Log Text: There is still plenty of time left in the day, and I am feeling OK, so I head off through Bamford and over to the Ladybower reservoir where I park up near Cutthroat Bridge. On the map it looks like an easy walk out to the Seven Stones of Hordron, but it turns out that there are big fences stopping me getting up onto the moor, so its a long walk down and then south along a trackway, then up onto the moor and turn back north to the lovely stone circle, probably my favourite of this weeks 10 visited. Returning I don’t want to do all that walk again, so decide to walk back the northeastern way, but once again am thwarted from getting down off the moor and back to the car directly, so its another long walk northwards across the moor before I can climb a gate to get off the moor. Its now a longish walk along the side of the A57 back to the car, with heavy traffic making it very unpleasant. Once back to the car I have time to stop for a pint at the Yorkshire Bridge Inn before heading back to Bakewell. It really is a lovely circle, and I am very glad I made the effort, even having to do three times the distance walking and I don’t mind.

Verulamium Museum submitted by Thorgrim on 9th Nov 2005. The Verulamium Museum is built in the style of Ancient Rome. It contains a wonderful collection of objects very well presented. Striking tableux bring the archaeology to life, but the stars of the museum are the gigantic mosaic floors. Go there - it's a must! Full details of contents, opening times and admission charges can be seen here

Log Text: Stop off to have a look at the Verulamium roman city remains, when on my way back from Essex. I haven't been here since primary school, and I still remember the Roman fort I made out of cardboard. What an excellent museum, with some tremendous finds and displays. Genuine roman wall paintings and superb mosaics incorporated into the displays.

Verulamium Town Walls submitted by TheCaptain on 9th May 2026. The main remaining stone section, which somehow survived demolition.

Log Text: Much of the city walls can be traced, and now surround the park. I didn't have time to see much of these, but I did go to look at the main remaining stone section, which somehow survived demolition. Most of the Abbey was built using the roman wall and city stone, brick and tile.
