Shap Avenue submitted by AngieLake on 3rd Jun 2011. These were the most noticeable stones fringing the east side of the road, heading back towards the village after visiting Kemp Howe, that might have possibly come from the ancient monuments.

Log Text: Driving up to Penrith on the day of the Queen's funeral, the M5 and M6 nicely free of traffic. I turn off at Shap for a look at some of the Shap Avenue stones. After a pint at the Kings Arms I decide I have enough time to have a look for many of the Shap stones.

Kemp Howe submitted by nicoladidsbury on 29th Mar 2004. This is the remains of what must have been a beautiful stone circle. The stones are pink granite and have a lovely glow. Unfortunately the ambience has been shattered by the "wonderful" victorians, who built the railway on top of it.

A quick look at Kemp Howe stone circle, but the field is closed off with livestock inside, so I satisfy myself with a look over the gate.

Log Text: After a pint at the Kings arms I decide I have enough time to have a look for many of the Shap stones. First off is the Giant's Foot, which is just across a field behind the house at the back of the pub. It’s a large flat stone.

Log Text: i drive through Shap and up the lanes to the northwest, finding somewhere to park, then just a little walk to the Goggleby Stone. Slightly disappointed to find it not so large as I had been thinking, and also very crudely concreted into the ground.

Log Text: Back to the car, and this stone can be seen in front of the wall on the skyline to the northwest, beyond the first few fields. I decide I can go and get a closer look at it by driving up to the north and then walking down the little lane. There are two stones in the field by the wall here, the larger stone that I could see before, and also a smaller one.

Ten stones form this small stone circle which is now huddled up against a drystone wall, in a field with a locked gate. On the other side of the wall, there appears to be a stone row.

Log Text: Onwards to Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle, my first new circle of the day. Easy parking beside the small lane running south, and its easy to see the circle just in the next field, but no entrance available today. It’s a small scruffy circle of large boulders, close to the field wall and with a cattle feeder placed inside it.

After looking south over the wall, the stone row was found and extended some 400yards down to the river/beck across the fell?
20 yards to the west of Castlehowe circle lies a smaller circle of 1ft high granite boulders buried in the grass?
Is this stone row contemporary with the circles at Castlehowe??
or have the quarry re-instated this line? It looks interesting but any
thoughts on this complex please

Log Text: Just to the west of the stone circle is what appears to be another rubble cairn surrounded by low boulders, with what seems to be a row or avenue of stones running south down a little valley across the open land.

10 stones remain on one side of a wall.
First stone on right is limestone the rest granite, this is found also at the Gamelands circle, Gunnerkeld and Iron Hill south a few metres away.

Log Text: Continuing on south and I park near the large flooded quarry, from where it’s a short walk uphill to the east to the top of Iron Hill. The northerly circle is a ring of stones surrounding a large round tumulus which is bisected by the field wall which runs right over the top of it. On the southern side, the circle of kerbstones is almost complete, but I could see nothing on the northern side, but couldnt gain access to have a close look.

Log Text: Continue south to Oddendale, where plenty of parking is available on the open moor. Walking south, and below the trees beside the wall just past the farm entrance is found a small circle of stones with a central cist structure. A lovely little monument, and makes me wonder how many more of these there must have been all over these hills.

The 'Giants Grave' is a collection of ancient grave stones comprising two 11' high stone crosses and four hog-back stones. An excavation of the 'Giants Grave' showed a skeleton underneath with a sword. The four hogback stones surrounding the grave are said to represent wild boar he killed in nearby Inglewood Forest.

Log Text: An evening in Penrith, and despite thinking I knew something like hogback stones were here, I missed seeing the Giant's Grave in the dark with the churchyard gates closed. But I did see the Giant's Thumb carved cross and take a picture of it from the nearby path.

Log Text: I now walk south along the trackway past the rough limestone pavement before heading out southwesterly across the open land to find the Oddendale circles. Quite hard to see at first, then they come into view, the stones hiding amongst the long grass. Upon closer inspection it is a really fabulous site, a large outer ring of big boulders surrounding a smaller ring with possible remains of a cist at the centre. There are several outlying stones around the large circle, some possibly forming an avenue to the northeast. Its lovely here with huge views all around and nobody else within sight. I spent quite a bit of time up here before heading back to the car and onwards to Penrith.
