Castle Howe (Little Langdale)

Castle Howe (Little Langdale) submitted by Alphasmam on 25th Jul 2014. Castle Howe is a small volcanic " lump" guarding Wrynose Pass and is locally known as a Neolithic hill fort. This picture was taken from the approaches to Fell Foot Farm looking towards Blea Tarn and Great Langdale. Wrynose has probably been a trackway since these times and would have been an important route to take connecting the west coast via the Duddon Valley and Great Langdale where the axe factories are located. It also would lead eastwards towards Little Langdale and south to Conis...

Log Text: If the weather is other than warm and dry and settled, try to find an approach on grass. There is one on the south side. Limestone pavement can be very slippery. It was covered in black ice at the time of my visit.

Let me know if you find a quern stone on, near or within the site.

Castle Dykes

Castle Dykes submitted by rich32 on 7th Jul 2004. Castle Dykes Henge, nr Aysgarth, North Yorkshire (SD98228728) The henge has a diameter of about 75m with the ditch being up to 2m in some places. There are entrances to the north, south & east, although only the eastern one is thought to be original and of antiquity. This henge is fairly well preserved, but as seems obligatory with our henges its covered in cow poo. This photo (looking east) does not really do the site justice.
