Steinacleit

Steinacleit submitted by SandyG on 10th Sep 2014. View from above and north west. This is an enigmatic site which would be at home in the South West of England but is very lonely on the Western Isles. A substantial irregular shaped enclosure attached to the structure strongly supports the idea that this site is an orthostatic round house.

The stones appear to denote the edges of narrow, parallel banks which are on the same alignment as the lazy beds in this area. Whilst the reason why the banks in this area were denoted with edge set stones is not clear, it is possible to be confident that this is not a prehistoric stone alignment. The adjacent cairn may be the result of field clearance.

As ever various theories surround the placing and use of the stone. However in 1994 Geophysic surveys by the "Time Team" suggest that there may have originally been a line of stones marking the way to Jura.
