Date Added: 22nd Jan 2019

Country: England (Devon)

Cheriton Ridge stone row submitted by TheCaptain on 20th Feb 2011. Looking along the length of the Cheriton Ridge stone row.
The stones are tiny and very difficult to find, with most of them probably buried under the turf and heather.

Lanacombe 5 submitted by TheCaptain on 5th Aug 2007. On the south facing slopes of Lanacombe Hill on Exmoor, above the stream valley, are the remains of this recently found stone setting.
I found many stones and stumps of stones standing proud of the ground, with below them a very marshy area possibly hiding many more. I also found several fallen and part buried stones, long and thin, which were obviously once meant to stand upright.

Log Text: Amble car parking is available at SS 76511 43232. From here head south east across the moorland to the site. Only one stone is upright and near to it is a broken stump. A couple of the larger recumbent stones are likely to have once stood upright but most of the stones are probably exposed bedrock. Whilst it is likely that there was a group of standing stones at this location not enough remains to establish their original form and therefore it is not possible to be confident that there was a stone row at this location.

Careg Lywd 2 submitted by SandyG on 23rd Oct 2019. Looking north along the row. The northern length of the row has been exposed by peat erosion and a shift in orientation coincides with an adjacent rock outcrop which blocks views from parts of the row. The row is orientated NNW to SSE and there is another stone row in the vicinity.

Sherberton Row submitted by Brian Byng on 7th Feb 2002. Sherberton Double Stone Row.
First recognised by me in 1997 and now listed. An unimpressive row with the stones barely showing above the turf. Location SX 6392 7328 It runs almost N/S & can be traced for about 100m. It appears to be aligned on the large
adjacent Sherberton Stone Circle to the south. The discovery of a row in association with another stone circle on Dartmoor raises the
possibility that more of the stone circles that now stand alone may have had rows.

There has been considerable confusion regarding this site over the years. Robert Knox describing the site in 1855 saw the two large stones as forming part of a double alignment than ran north to south with a further pair of stones (now destroyed) 110 yards further to north. A few years earlier in 1852 Samuel Anderson who excavated Swarth Howe claimed that the stones formed remains of a single row that extended between Swarth Howe and the cairn at NZ 84173 08932. The two additional stones found during fieldwork may lend some support to Anderson's interpretation, although both are of uncertain authenticity. On balance Anderson's interpretation is probably the more valid, but given the degree of uncertainty this row should be best considered as possible at best.

There is a slight chance that this represents the marking out for a cross dyke, but the fact that only a very short length of ditch survives means that it is much more likely to represent a stone row.

High Bridestones (Yorks) submitted by JimChampion on 7th Dec 2007. August 2007. The High Bridestones, on the moor. Just one of the megaliths is still standing, with small change firmly wedged into its many crevices. A megalithic shambles indeed. The heather in bloom says that it is summer, although the temperature (and wind) on this day was more like winter!

Despite the problems associated with determining which stones are natural and which ones were placed it is probable that this is a stone row leading away from one of the two stone circles in this area. The presence of considerable quantities of surface stone means that without excavation it is not possible to be certain that this is a stone row.

The considerable gap between the two groups of stones means that it is possible that this monument represents the remains of two separate settings. For this reason this site should properly be considered as a possible row.
