Yorkshire Museum submitted by DavidRaven on 23rd Jun 2007. The carved stone residing in the grounds of the Yorkshire Museum.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This stone with rock art has been moved slightly since the last recorded visit, but is in the same general location and the carvings are face-up. It is now slightly further away from the pedestrian path and surrounded by lavender plants so is unlikely to be used as a seat. Unfortunately there is no information plaque and hundreds of people pass this by without knowing if its importance or beauty. The exact grid ref is SE 59968 52096: on the right of the main path from the Lendall entrance to the gardens to the museum front door, and quite close to the museum itself.

Log Text: York Cross is one of the less-interesting of the many moorland stones and crosses locally but can visited en-route to some of the others.

Log Text: I did not approach these barrows closely but took them in from the roadside near Chimney Bank. They are a marked feature on the horizon.

Log Text: GPS needed! This rock is a really excellent find but is not easy to locate. It is well off the path between Garfit Gap and Garfit farm and has to be approached from the Garfit Gap (NW) side through waste-high bracken down a fairly steep slope. The markings are very interesting and there is an stunning view down Bilsdale: you can really see why it was chosen as a rock art location. An excellent lunch spot.

The Wainstones 5

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The Snakestone is a large boulder shed from the Wainstones supported at 45 degrees and with a long curvi-linear pecked groove ending in a head-like shape. The background with the Wainstones is exceptional, and it's not hard to imagine why it was thought to be significant by prehistoric artists. There is some modern graffiti.

The Wainstones 3

Log Text: I tried to track this down using the coordinates in Smith BA and Walker AA 2008 Rock Art and Ritual. The History Press. However, the coordinates in the book are erroneous and also the field boundaries in the region have been altered since that book was written. The rock now has a fair sized Holly tree growing out of a crevice so is easy to locate from that if you know the rough area to look in. The cups and surrounding ring were faint but discernible. It's a good-looking rock.

Log Text: The Wainstones are a "must" visit for their exceptional interest and views, and the many other nearby pre-historic sites. The Cleveland Way passes through them between Hasty bank and Garfit Gap.

The Bridestones (Staindale)

The Bridestones (Staindale)

The Bridestones (Staindale) submitted by Sunny100 on 20th Sep 2010. Probably one of the best known of the sandstone rock formations known as The Bridestones at Staindale, North York Moors, is the salt-seller or pepperpot standing at 30 feet tall on its slender stone pedestal. Erosion over thousands of years has caused these curious shapes to occur.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The Bridestones are great fun. You can park at Staindale car park in Dalby Forest and a short steep walk takes you to the stones. You can clamber over quite a few of them and there is a nice walk down Dovedale to take you back to the car park.

Log Text: Stump cross helps relieve the monotony of crossing Lealholm Moor. It is clearly pretty ruined. Not worth visiting except as part of a wider tour of local sites.

Log Text: I visited this as part of a round walk of Ampleforth but was very disappointed. Considering the size and decent condition of the site, it is clearly not appreciated locally: it's in a fenced area in the middle of a crop field. The field was clearly moorland some decades ago. The crop field detracts from the ambience a lot. There was no access path, although a couple of signs showed where to walk across it. There is a layby where you can park a car on the nearby road. There is a gate into the site through the fence, but this was overgrown with grass and nettles and it was hard work to open and then bash through the nettles and brambles into the site. Inside the site was overgrown, and I was clearly the first person to enter for some time. Inside, the ditch and banks were interesting but I didn't feel inclined to linger: is was a forlorn place. The site could be considerably enhanced for visitors with a better access path, some mowing and weeding, and some information panels. It deserves better. Lots of potential but needs realizing.

St Chad's Well (Lastingham) submitted by kelpie on 21st Feb 2004. SE 7294 9054 This well lies in Lastingham village and commemorates St Chad who helped build the local monastery with his brother Cedd, he later became Bishop of Lichfield.

St Cedd's Well

St Cedd's Well submitted by kelpie on 21st Feb 2004. SE 7290 9047 St Cedd was granted land by Ethelwald and aided by his brother, Chad, built a monastery near Lastingham. This well bears his name and the stones for the housing are said to have come from Rosedale Abbey. Probably a christianised pagan well.

Log Text: This roadside well-site still has the old stonework and some of the metalwork, but there is now no water to be seen.

Round Hill East

Round Hill East submitted by SolarMegalith on 31st Jul 2017. Round Hill barrow seen from the West (photo taken on July 2017).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Round Hill is the highest point on the North York Moors and should be visited for that reason alone, but the presence of a Bronze age barrow, trig pillar, and many interesting other local sites makes this a must-do. Superb views, and it is surprisingly easy walking to get to such a height along the Cleveland Way.

Percy Cross Rigg Settlement

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is right next to a road but not a busy one, and there is a good moorland vista all around. A fence surrounds the site providing some protection and there is also some signing. Some of the hut walls are easy to make out either from stones or the terrain.

Percy Cross and Bowl Barrow

Percy Cross and Bowl Barrow

Percy Cross and Bowl Barrow submitted by johndhunter on 23rd Oct 2018. Percy Cross and Bowl Barrow – Viewed looking northerly May 2012. All that remains is the socket stone. This along with its cross originally stood on the bowl barrow to the left of the Land Rover. The promontory on the skyline in the centre of the image is Highcliff Nab above Guisborough

Log Text: The barrow is a fine mound of heather, though it has been excavated long ago. I completely missed the cross stump when I visited. The moorland vista is impressive.

Pentre Ifan

Pentre Ifan submitted by Horatio on 22nd Jun 2020. A year later and back at Pentre Ifan for the solstice sunset, all on my own some (apart from a 13yr old Jack Russell this time) I Was expecting at least to see one other (person not Jack Russell) at this site for the sunset. That morning I'd gone to see the sunrise at Gors Fawr stone circle and even left my house in the rain knowing there was zero chance of seeing a sunrise, I definitely was not disappointed, crap weather but I enjoyed being amongst the stones as the solstice sun rose, the cu...

Log Text: A narrow country road takes you to within 100 meters of this site. There is parking for about 8 cars in a layby. Because of the popularity of the site this is not always sufficient! There is an information board with artwork. You can walk around the site and touch the stones. The capstone is almost unbelievably perched on the tips of the uprights as if hovering in midair.....the whole vision is quite astonishing.
