The Bridestones (Staindale) | Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 28th Aug 2017 | 3 | 5 | 4 | The Bridestones are great fun. You can park at Staindale car park in Dalby Forest and a short steep walk takes you to the stones. You can clamber over quite a few of them and there is a nice walk down Dovedale to take you back to the car park.
Malo Cross | Ancient Cross | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 30th Jun 2021 | 3 | 4 | 2 | Malo cross is in relatively good condition compared to many of the NYM crosses. It's at an intersection of paths and lies on a pass over Saltergate Brow. Nice ambience.
Studfold Ring (Ampleforth) | Ancient Village or Settlement | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 14th Oct 2021 | 4 | 2 | 4 | I visited this as part of a round walk of Ampleforth but was very disappointed. Considering the size and decent condition of the site, it is clearly not appreciated locally: it's in a fenced area in the middle of a crop field. The field was clearly moorland some decades ago. The crop field detracts ... Read More |

Burton Howe | Round Barrow(s) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 2nd May 2022 | 3 | 4 | 2 | Burton Howe overlooks the Cleveland escarpment and has a marker stone on top. There are good views. It is right by the Cleveland Way and can be visited as part of a tour of other local sites.
Danby Beacon | Round Barrow(s) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 29th Jun 2022 | 3 | 5 | 5 | The views from Danby Beacon are superb. The downside is that it is heavily visited, so you may have to put up with crowds. It's a pity that that barrow has been adorned with a modern creation. There is a trig pillar. It can be visited by car, bike, or on foot.
Stump Cross (Lealholm Moor) | Ancient Cross | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 29th Jun 2022 | 2 | 3 | 3 | Stump cross helps relieve the monotony of crossing Lealholm Moor. It is clearly pretty ruined. Not worth visiting except as part of a wider tour of local sites.
Face Stone (Urra Moor) | Standing Stone (Menhir) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 1st Jul 2022 | 3 | 4 | 2 | The face-stone is near Round Hill and can be visited as part of a wider tour of the local antiquarian sites. It is right by the Cleveland Way and has interesting and unique markings.
Hand Stone (Urra Moor) | Standing Stone (Menhir) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 1st Jul 2022 | 3 | 4 | 2 | The handstone is one of the many interesting local features worth seeking out. It is right by the Cleveland Way and hard to miss. The markings are exceptional.
Round Hill East | Round Barrow(s) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 1st Jul 2022 | 5 | 2 | Round Hill is the highest point on the North York Moors and should be visited for that reason alone, but the presence of a Bronze age barrow, trig pillar, and many interesting other local sites makes this a must-do. Superb views, and it is surprisingly easy walking to get to such a height along the ... Read More |

Foster Howes | Round Barrow(s) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 25th Aug 2022 | 4 | 3 | Foster Howes is a good-looking group of barrows which can be visited as part of a tour of the many local pre-historic sites in the region.
Ann's Cross | Ancient Cross | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 25th Aug 2022 | 4 | 3 | Ann's Cross is yet another cross on a barrow....the whole area is replete with them. The barrow is quite low compared to others locally, and the views not as good as from others.
Louven Howe | Round Barrow(s) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 25th Aug 2022 | 5 | 2 | Louven Howe is interesting and just as worth visiting as the nearby Lilla Howe. There is a marker stone on top, and heaven of heavens, an OS trig pillar right next-door. Good views all round.
Lilla Cross | Ancient Cross | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 25th Aug 2022 | 5 | 2 | Lilla Cross and Lilla Howe are superb and well worth the walk. The view all around is exceptional and the site is full of interest.
York Cross (Sneaton High Moor) | Ancient Cross | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 25th Aug 2022 | 3 | 3 | York Cross is one of the less-interesting of the many moorland stones and crosses locally but can visited en-route to some of the others.
Flass Brow Round Barrow | Round Barrow(s) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 25th Aug 2022 | 3 | 4 | 4 | This round barrow and marker stones is close to the layby on the A169. The whole area is replete with barrows and wayside crosses and this can be visited as part of a longer walk touring many of them. There is a good moorland view all around from the top of the barrow and the marker stones provide a... Read More |

Low Cross (Appleton Le Moors) | Ancient Cross | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 16th Apr 2023 | 2 | 3 | 5 | A ruined cross by the roadside, with a convenient seat nearby. A nice lunch location.
Percy Cross and Bowl Barrow | Ancient Cross | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 8th Aug 2023 | 3 | 4 | 5 | The barrow is a fine mound of heather, though it has been excavated long ago. I completely missed the cross stump when I visited. The moorland vista is impressive.
Percy Cross Rigg Settlement | Ancient Village or Settlement | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 8th Aug 2023 | 3 | 4 | 5 | This is right next to a road but not a busy one, and there is a good moorland vista all around. A fence surrounds the site providing some protection and there is also some signing. Some of the hut walls are easy to make out either from stones or the terrain.
Grey Horse Stone (Stony Marl Moor) | Standing Stone (Menhir) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 9th Aug 2023 | 3 | 4 | 3 | One of the easiest pre-historic sites to find on these moors as it is right by a track and quite prominent. There are various hollows and grooves in the top that may have been modified. There is a possible cup-and-ring mark on one side.
The Wainstones | Rock Outcrop | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 11th Aug 2023 | 3 | 5 | 2 | The Wainstones are a "must" visit for their exceptional interest and views, and the many other nearby pre-historic sites. The Cleveland Way passes through them between Hasty bank and Garfit Gap.
The Wainstones 5 | Rock Art | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 11th Aug 2023 | 3 | 5 | 2 | The Snakestone is a large boulder shed from the Wainstones supported at 45 degrees and with a long curvi-linear pecked groove ending in a head-like shape. The background with the Wainstones is exceptional, and it's not hard to imagine why it was thought to be significant by prehistoric artists. Ther... Read More |

Broughton Bank WAI 1a | Rock Art | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 11th Aug 2023 | 3 | 4 | 2 | This rock possibly represents the most sacred of the Wainstones art rocks as it lies on the very edge of the Cleveland Escarpment and overlooks Roseberry Topping. It is, bizarrely, part of a field boundary and a fence crosses right over the top of the rock. The rock has many modified basins with cup... Read More |

The Wainstones 3 | Rock Art | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 11th Aug 2023 | 4 | 4 | 2 | I tried to track this down using the coordinates in Smith BA and Walker AA 2008 Rock Art and Ritual. The History Press. However, the coordinates in the book are erroneous and also the field boundaries in the region have been altered since that book was written. The rock now has a fair sized Holly tr... Read More |

The Wainstones 6 | Rock Art | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 11th Aug 2023 | 4 | 4 | 1 | GPS needed! This rock is a really excellent find but is not easy to locate. It is well off the path between Garfit Gap and Garfit farm and has to be approached from the Garfit Gap (NW) side through waste-high bracken down a fairly steep slope. The markings are very interesting and there is an stunni... Read More |

Cheshire Stone (Urra Moor) | Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 11th Aug 2023 | 3 | 5 | 2 | The Cheshire Stone overlooks Garfit Gap and Hasty Bank, and contains a natural series of hollows which Smith and Walker (2008) consider may have been enhanced by notching and addition of other cups and hollows in pre-historic times. This is hard to get to in summer due to bracken and lack of a direc... Read More |

Lord Stones Cairn Circle. | Barrow Cemetery | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 19th Nov 2023 | 3 | 3 | 5 | The two barrows by the Three Lords Stone are the most rewarding of these features, retaining a heather covering and the stone itself. RB3 retains some kerb stones but is a bit eroded and a track has been driven right next to it.
Hall Cliff Stone (Green Bank) | Marker Stone | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 19th Nov 2023 | 4 | 3 | 4 | A square boundary stone next to a modern stone circle.
Drake Howe | Round Barrow(s) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 19th Nov 2023 | 4 | 5 | 2 | This is the summit of Cringle Moor, which is a long and fairly steep if excellent walk along the Cleveland Way. Excellent views and an easy path through the heather exists to the barrow, which has a well-marked Cairn.
Grey Horse Stone (Stony Marl Moor) | Standing Stone (Menhir) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 26th Jul 2024 | 5 | 5 | 3 | This is a very enjoyable standing stone. It attracts lots of coin-offerings, and there are some cup and cup-and-ring markings on one face.
Brow Moor - Rock 80 | Rock Art | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 26th Jul 2024 | 5 | 4 | 3 | This is an excellent rock with interesting markings, well worth the effort of tracking down. It's a fair walk across tall heather from the track across the moor. You will need a GPS and accurate grid reference to find it, and will need to be prepared for a few scratches on your legs. The two cup-and... Read More |

Brow Moor - Rock 104 | Rock Art | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 26th Jul 2024 | 4 | 3 | 3 | This rock is quite easy to find if you have a GPA and an accurate grid reference. It is a a few yards south from the track across Stony Marl Moor from Ravenscar Beacon, and lies along a linear ditch. At the time of visit a small fire had cleared the vegetation around it and the cups and linear marki... Read More |

St Chad's Well (Lastingham) | Holy Well or Sacred Spring | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 7th Aug 2024 | 3 | 4 | 5 | The well site has old stonework and a metal pump but the pump is not in working condition. 7th August 2024.
St Cedd's Well | Holy Well or Sacred Spring | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 7th Aug 2024 | 3 | 4 | 5 | This roadside well-site still has the old stonework and some of the metalwork, but there is now no water to be seen.
Three Howes (Blakey) | Barrow Cemetery | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 7th Aug 2024 | 4 | 3 | I did not approach these barrows closely but took them in from the roadside near Chimney Bank. They are a marked feature on the horizon.
Ana Cross Round Barrow and Wayside Cross | Round Barrow(s) | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 7th Aug 2024 | 4 | 5 | 2 | Ana Cross and barrow are slap in the middle of Spaunton Moor and a fair walk is required to get to it, though a mountain bike would give access along the moorland track from Chimney Bank at Rosedale Abbey. I walked across from Lastingham to the south. The view on approach with the heather in bloom w... Read More |

Carnedd Meibion Owen Tor 3 | Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature | Wales | Pembrokeshire | Visited | 4th Sep 2024 | 5 | 5 | 3 | There are great views of the surroundings from here. A visit to the old moss-covered oaks of Ty Canol and the dolmen of Pentre Ifan are also a must from here.
Pentre Ifan | Portal Tomb | Wales | Pembrokeshire | Visited | 4th Sep 2024 | 5 | 5 | 5 | A narrow country road takes you to within 100 meters of this site. There is parking for about 8 cars in a layby. Because of the popularity of the site this is not always sufficient! There is an information board with artwork. You can walk around the site and touch the stones. The capstone is almost ... Read More |

Pennock Puzzle Stone | Carving | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 3rd Jul 2024 | 5 | 4 | 3 | Easy to find as it's right next to a footpath alongside Lins Farm Cottage. Visible from a few meters away and the markings are clear.
Allan Tofts 7 | Rock Art | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 2nd Nov 2024 | 4 | 3 | 2 | This rock is in a fairly featureless boggy area with many other surrounding stones, and unless you have an accurate GPS and exact grid reference you may struggle to find it. A few large cup marks were discernible but much of the top of the rock is flush with the vegetation and it has encroached over... Read More |
||
Allan Tofts 9 | Rock Art | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 2nd Nov 2024 | 4 | 2 | 2 | This is one of the easier stones with rock art to locate at Allan Tofts as it is right next to a track, but a good GPS and accurate grid reference will still help as there are many other nearby stones and the rock art is not very visible. Mossy growth almost completely obscured the cups and ring.
Allan Tofts 5c | Rock Art | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 2nd Nov 2024 | 3 | 5 | 2 | To find, this requires an accurate GPS and exact grid reference (5 figures easting and northing) as there are numerous other rocks in the area and navigation is confusing. It is somewhat on its own in boggy vegetation close to several Bronze age cairns. The rock art is not very obvious because the r... Read More |

Yorkshire Museum | Museum | England | Yorkshire (North) | Visited | 1st Nov 2024 | 5 | 4 | 4 | This stone with rock art has been moved slightly since the last recorded visit, but is in the same general location and the carvings are face-up. It is now slightly further away from the pedestrian path and surrounded by lavender plants so is unlikely to be used as a seat. Unfortunately there is no ... Read More |
