Gawton's Well
Date Added: 1st Apr 2015
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Would like to visit
Gawton's Well submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Nov 2008. Got around to visiting here yesterday, and it's brilliant. It's only 16 miles east for me, so returning won't be too much of an issue. Very atmospheric woodland and castle like folly neaby too. I wouldn't be surprised if therein lies a connection with the well.
The spring lies within a large circular wall, in varying states of collapse, and within that is an elipse of yew trees - reminiscent of the ring of trees in "Nightmare Before Christmas". If this were Wales I'd start thinking this was th...

Gardoms Edge 1 submitted by PaulM on 1st Sep 2001. Gardom’s Edge Prehistoric Rock Art, Derbyshire GR: SK273730
One of the finest examples of prehistoric rock art in the Peak District. Discovered in 1965 on a large earthfast boulder 25m east of the enclosure , the design consists of a series of cup and ringmarks together with a small spiral and two circles that enclose multiple cupmarks. Unfortunately, the original boulder had to be reburied some years ago as the pattern was quickly eroding away, but an exact replica fibre glass cast now s...

Flimston Castle submitted by pab on 6th Jun 2009. Flimston Fort. View of ramparts and ditches, taken from the west. The large crack in the cliff shows just how much the headland will have reduced in extent since its use as hillfort.
Photo taken 31 May 2009 - before travelling far to see the site, check first that access is allowed as the raod goes through the Castlemartin (tank) firing range.

Five Wells submitted by PaulM on 31st Aug 2001. General view of Five Wells Chambered Cairn (Derbyshire) GR:SK124711. Reputed to be the highest megalithic tomb in Britain, Five Wells chambered cairn stands on the false crest of a limestone plateau, 427m (1400ft) high on Taddington Moor, overlooking the fertile Wye valley. The chambered cairn is now a shadow of its former self after the mound was removed by wall builders around 200 years ago and after extensive excavation by the local antiquarian Thomas Bateman in 1846. Only one of the chambe...

Ffyst Samson submitted by pab on 2nd Mar 2009. Looking under Ffyst Samson out towards the Irish Sea. This photo shows just how massive the capstone is. Combined with there being only 2 uprights with very limited contact with the capstone they support, the whole thing manages to look very strange!

Ffynnon Wnda submitted by PAB on 4th Sep 2015. Ffynnon Wnda, in June 2011. At this stage, the well wasn't as obscured as shown in rogerkread's photos from July 2015. His photos showed it looking so sad that I looked back at my earlier ones.
It's a bit worrying if it's now being looked after, as it is such a lovely setting.
