Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Bretagne:Finistère (29)

Sited in the hamlet of St Gildas (in the Commune of Guisseny), this spring/fountain is one of several in Brittany dedicated to the Celtic St Gildas. Gildas spent 10 years in Brittany, and he is the 'rain saint' of Brittany, just as St Cewydd was in Wales before the Saxons transferred this tradition to St Swithun. (Source: The Book of Welsh Saints).

The hamlet contains a former Priory (now a private house), as well as a medieval stone cross and some small menhirs of unconfirmed antiquity.

There are also two interesting 'lavoirs' or communal clothes washing pools close to the well.

Fontaine de Saint-Gildas
Fontaine de Saint-Gildas submitted by pab : Detail from end wall - although now rather eroded and therefore not easy to capture in a photo, this panel has the arms of Kergoniou - 3 Blackbirds. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Fontaine de Saint-Gildas
Fontaine de Saint-Gildas submitted by pab : Fontaine de Saint-Gildas, October 2014. The end wall contains both a statue of St Gildas and a panel bearing the arms of the nearby Chatueau of Kergoniou - just above the statue alcove. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Fontaine de Saint-Gildas
Fontaine de Saint-Gildas submitted by pab : Fontaine de Saint-Gildas. This small basin is at the base of the wall - in other wells dedicated to St Gildas in Brittany there was a tradition of blessing animals, but there was no information at this location indicating whether this was the case here.
