The Hurkling Stone

The Hurkling Stone submitted by MartinRS on 9th Aug 2013. The Hurkling Stone on White Edge Moor. A prominent rock outcrop on White Edge itself is often mistaken for the Hurkling Stone probably because the letter 'H' is near to this stone on OS 1:25 000 maps. The Hurkling Stone is in fact a boundary marker and can be found next to the letter 'e' in stone on these maps. © Copyright Martin Speck and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons CC BY-SA 2.0 Licence.

Stoke Flat

Stoke Flat submitted by PaulM on 1st Sep 2001. Froggatt Edge stone circle (aka Stoke Flat), Derbyshire GR: SK249768 Froggatt Edge stone circle is set on a flat shelf, overlooking the picturesque Derwent Valley. Often referred to as Stoke Flat, the site is complex, though now sadly quite ruined. It consists of an embanked stone circle with two entrances exactly opposite, to the north-north-west and south-south-east. Traces of dry-stone walling in the northern entrance suggest that it may have been deliberately blocked at some time in p...

Nine Ladies

Nine Ladies submitted by PaulM on 1st Sep 2001. Nine Ladies Stone Circle (aka Stanton Moor 2), Derbyshire GR: SK249635 Nine Ladies is a typical Derbyshire circle consisting of nine visible small standing stones embedded in a grassed over stone rubble bank approximately 11.5m by 10.5m in diameter. The site is the most popular in Derbyshire and much in the media spotlight due to quarrying plans in the area. The stones are all composed of local millstone grit and none are taller than one metre in height. The bank has now all but disappea...

Harrys Stone submitted by MartinRS on 16th Aug 2013. The site of Oxdale Lodge, by the side of Houndkirk Road. Fairbank's 18th Century map shows Oxdale Lodge to be the location of Harrys Stone. According to Addy, a 19th Century historian, 'Harry is the Anglo-Saxon hearh or hearg (pronounced harry), meaning a temple or idol.' Harrys Stone had gone by the time Addy visited this site in the 1880's. Martin Speck. (CC BY-SA 2.0)

Gardoms Edge 1 submitted by PaulM on 1st Sep 2001. Gardom’s Edge Prehistoric Rock Art, Derbyshire GR: SK273730 One of the finest examples of prehistoric rock art in the Peak District. Discovered in 1965 on a large earthfast boulder 25m east of the enclosure , the design consists of a series of cup and ringmarks together with a small spiral and two circles that enclose multiple cupmarks. Unfortunately, the original boulder had to be reburied some years ago as the pattern was quickly eroding away, but an exact replica fibre glass cast now s...
