Log Text: At first sight I thought Stanton Drew circles were a jumble of stones, however after a 15 minute walk around the site the circles and avenues appeared before my eyes.

Stanton Drew SSW

Stanton Drew SSW submitted by HarryTwenty on 17th Sep 2019. Fallen and nearly forgotten.

Log Text: The SSW Circle is badly neglected in comparison with its larger neighbours. Admittedly, there is also much less to see.

Log Text: Combining standing stones and a pub is always a good idea. Probably the best standing stones in the world!

Stoney Littleton

Visited: Yes on 22nd Mar 2010. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 4

Stoney Littleton

Stoney Littleton submitted by TheCaptain on 18th Mar 2005. Stoney Littleton barrow viewed from the west. Its a cracking little barrow, with the most wonderful passage and chambers inside, and the powers that be have even left a decent sized area around it free of any farming activity. A lovely sunny day, but some of the walk to the barrow was horrendously muddy. The fields around the barrow had recently been ploughed, a crop of beet of some sort having been the last grown. While walking back after my visit, I found a bit of the lovely golden colou...

Log Text: This restored long barrow is an unexpected gem, given its relative isolation. The restoration is more sympathetic than Newgrange.

Home Covert Tumulus

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Home Covert Tumulus is easy to visit from a lay-by on the A1066. The tumulus is also known as Boudicca's Grave, one of several sites around Southern England claiming to be Boudicca's last resting place.

Thetford Castle

Date Added: 16th Jun 2025
Site Type: Hillfort Country: England (Norfolk)
Visited: Yes on 27th Apr 2017

Thetford Castle

Thetford Castle submitted by Runemage on 10th Jul 2010. Thetford Castle Hillfort
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Thetford Castle is an amalgam of an ancient Iron Age fort built in c. 450 BC and a less ancient Norman Motte and Bailley constructed in c. 1075 within the Iron Age Outer Rampart & Ditch defences. The best view of the Iron Age remains is from the summit of the central mound.

Robin Hood's Stone

Robin Hood's Stone

Robin Hood's Stone submitted by vicky on 24th Jan 2004. A close up of Robin Hood's stone showing the weathering grooves.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Robin Hood's Stone is the definitive example of an anachronism, a standing stone in an urban environment. The green iron railings which imprison the standing stone emphasise it's alienation.

Arthur's Stone

Date Added: 15th Apr 2021
Site Type: Chambered Tomb Country: England (Herefordshire)
Visited: Yes on 25th Aug 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 5

Arthur's Stone

Arthur's Stone submitted by Adam Stanford on 21st Jul 2006. Taken during recent work to investigate the full extent of the covering mound for this monument. Cheers AS.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: There is no logical reason that the amount of effort required to reach a site should affect your interpretation of the site. However I have found that I undervalue sites adjacent to the roadside in comparison with sites in the middle of nowhere. That said, the remains of Arthur's Stone are quite impressive.

Avening burial chambers

Date Added: 17th Apr 2021
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 11th Jan 2014. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 3

Avening burial chambers

Avening burial chambers submitted by theCaptain on 20th Apr 2010. The entrance stones of the SE chamber. No remains of the supposed porthole entrance can be seen, its now buried below ground level after the hillslide.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The burial chambers have been artfully placed in the rectory garden in Avening, however, in principle I do not agree with people removing parts of an ancient monument for their own gratification. The original site is devalued and the new site is questionable at best.

Crickley Hill

Log Text: Crickley Hill Enclosure is a large space that requires imagination to interpret the remains. The most impressive feature is the Iron Age Rampart at the entrance to the Enclosure.

Stalldown Encircled Cairn

Log Text: Stalldown Encircled Cairn is within 30 yards of Stalldown Stone Row on the Northern third of Stalldown Stone Row. Walk c. 100 yards NNW of Stalldown Cairn Circle to find the cairn.

Log Text: Bowerman's Nose is one of those splendid oddities which don't have an explanation. They are happy accidents. They don't need to be explained they just exist.

Burford Down Stone Row

Date Added: 9th Jun 2021

Visited: Yes on 2nd Sep 2020. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 3

Burford Down Stone Row

Burford Down Stone Row submitted by Tom_Bullock on 9th Jul 2002. The Burford Down stone row, one of the finest in Dartmoor, shows evidence of recent damage by whatever farmer is running huge tractors across the fields. S(he) has been driving right through the rows (perpendicular to them) along several tracks. I saw evidence of at least 3 stones that had been dislodged and pushed aside by the wheels of the tractor. I don't know if there is a procedure for reporting such damage, or even if the farmer is liable for such damage. I have never, in my 12 year...
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The small stones which largely make up Burford Down Stone Row are not visually impressive but the length of the stone row is extensive. It was interesting to investigate gaps in the row for buried stones.

Log Text: Burford Down Cairn Circle is partially hidden by gorse but the two upright kerb stones identified it as an ancient site. In the middle of the cairn there is an open chamber with one lining stone remaining.

Log Text: Hound Tor Kerb Cairn is easily visited at the foot of Hound Tor. The kerb cairn has a continuous kerb from N Arc to S Arc. The central cist has been exposed. The interior of the cairn has been entirely robbed of stones except for S & W Cist Stones.

Log Text: Hound Tor Medieval Village lies SE of Hound Tor. The footprints of the buildings are well preserved however the layout is somewhat confusing. There are four longhouses surrounded by ancillary houses and barns.

Log Text: I love an unexpected cairn. On the way back from Hound Tor Medieval Village I noticed this cairn next to the road with a convenient car park. Bonus!

Log Text: Hound Tor impressive outcrops form a natural enclosure. It is easy to see why ancient people would choose this elevated location as a defensive location.

Sherberton circle

Date Added: 19th Sep 2022

Sherberton circle

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It is always disappointing to realise that practical considerations take precedence over the sanctity of an ancient site. Somebody thought it was easier to vandalise a stone circle rather than alter the course of a field boundary. At least the Sherberton Stone Circle has survived in its somewhat ruined state.

Merrivale circle

Date Added: 14th Nov 2022

Log Text: Merrivale Stone Circle is not spectacular. The stones are small, but it is surrounded by more substantial antiquarian sites.
