Mayburgh

Mayburgh submitted by wildtalents on 15th May 2024. The henge banks at Mayburgh were built up mainly using cobbles like those surrounding the one remaining megalith at the site. It's a really large structure and may have been a meeting point for many hundreds of people at a time. These days mainly sheep throng the henge. Image from spring 2023.

Penrith Museum

Penrith Museum submitted by Anne T on 25th Feb 2023. The Norse cross base, tucked away in a small corner of the museum by their display of rock art stones. A sign just describes it as 'Norse' and gives details of how these cross bases would have been used. I hadn't expected to see this here, so for someone who searches for these cross bases, it was a treat to see it. Museum staff (volunteers?) were unable to help me with more details on the day, suggesting I email the museum for more information, which I've done.

St David's Head

St David's Head submitted by Adam Stanford on 29th Nov 2004. Inside the enclosure with the seven, possibly eight circular hut remains clearly visible in the foreground. The ramparts are obscured by the rock outcrop, which runs parallel to them (left to right) in the middle of this picture. Coetan Arthur is just beyond another rock outcrop, below the horizon to the left and the double dolmen of Carn Llidi is hard to spot on the slopes in the distance. Between Carn Llidi and Coetan Arthur is another settlement area and ancient field system, delineated by a ...

St Mary's Motte (Beaumont) submitted by Anne T on 22nd Aug 2017. Looking at the southern section of the motte, which has been partly cut by the modern road through the village. Pastscape says that the site may originally have been a Saxon or Danish settlement, then the site of turret 70a on Hadrian's Wall, then a Norman motte, finally being replaced by the church in the 12th century.
