An Interpretation of Cup and Ring Rock Art Using the Harris and Stockdale Megalithic Foot (HSMF)  Popular
Description: This paper contains the first of three brief reports from research carried out by Peter Harris and the late Norman Stockdale, in the 1980s and 1990s, on and around the moors above Ilkley, West Yorkshire. The three papers provide the possible interpretations of: Two Incised Stone Designs on Rombalds Moor, The Distribution of Five Carved Stones on Baildon Moor, and an Interpretation of Backstone Beck Enclosure, Green Crag Slack, Ilkley. The authors propose that a general unit of length was used in the planning and design of these megalithic projects and in the stone engravings. The standard unit of length believed to be used was called the Megalithic Foot (MF), it measured 14.142 inches/35.919 cms. It is also believed that the Megalithic Foot (MF) was subdivided into 56 equal parts of 0.2525 inches/0.6414 cms; this unit was called the Megalithic Inch (Mi). Initially it was felt that an integral part of megalithic designs was to incorporate key and important units of time. With specific reference to the carved rocks on Ilkley Moor, the important astronomical time units are listed and summarized below.

  Megalithic Portal News Ticker  Popular
Description: Keep an eye on the latest ancient news (!) from the Megalithic Portal whenever you feel like it.

Keep yourself updated with News, Announcements, Reviews and Events. It might not look much at the moment, but we'll be adding more free content to the little box on your screen, such as latest gallery thumbnails, latest forum posts, perhaps the latest headings from the Stones List. Give it a try.

It's a small self-installing program called megalithic_setup.exe that you download and run. This is a completely standard Windows application, which creates a folder by default in C:Program FilesMegalithic News, a link in your Start Menu and an Uninstaller. It doesn't contain anything unsavoury, doesn't send any information back to us, and has been carefully checked for viruses, but as always with these things, you are responsible for virus checking on your computer, etc. See the small print in the 'About' section of the program.

This news ticker has been kindly created for us by Adremluk of www.wicca.ws . Check out their World Pagan News Ticker which you can also download from us. You are very welcome to include links to either of these tickers, or offer them as downloads from your web site.
