Ty Mawr (Nr Holyhead)
Ty Mawr (Nr Holyhead) submitted by rogerkread : The inappropriate buildings are now on several sides of the menhir. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone in Anglesey. Access: Very good. On the road outside of Holyhead. Reminiscent of a whippy ice-cream, twisted around to a conical point.

Visible from the road, we parked up, and over a stile, this signposted stone is no problem to find. Just down the road from a burial chamber. (see nearby sites list) The stone: Much taller than me, maybe 8ft tall; sheep wool, bird poo and lichen decorated this one.

Note: The god-awful buildings now surrounding this standing stone on Anglesey at least enabled some exciting archaeological discoveries, including a Neolithic long house, settlements, and apparent 'ritual fire pits'. There's an upcoming talk on the 5th April in Bangor, more details of all this in the comments on our page.

An impressive standing stone, but not a location where one can forget the time we live in. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

New Neolithic evidence from Anglesey, Saturday 6th April 2019, 1.30-5pm
An afternoon of talks about some of the most exciting Neolithic sites excavated in Wales in the last few years:

Jane Kenney - Houses, Halls and Hovels: Evidence of the Neolithic from Parc Cybi
Cathering Rees - Settling Down, Moving on and Coming Back - Neolithic Histories at Llanfeathlu
Frances Lynch - New Observations on Pottery assemblages from Anglesey

Pontio is in the centre of Bangor about 10 mins walk, straight down the road as you come out of the station.
Trains (c. 8.20-9.50am ) from Cardiff, London, Birmingham and Manchester can get you there in time -- and return you!
By car, take the Bangor turn off J11 of A55 and follow A5 into town. Pontio is on the right, directly below the university building on the hill; car parks on left.
There are cafes and snack bars in the building. The venue is not free so there is a £5.00 fee, at the door

Archaeology at Parc Cybi, Tŷ Mawr, Holyhead by Andy B on Friday, 15 March 2019
(User Info | Send a Message)
Between November 2006 and the end of June 2008 Gwynedd Archaeological Trust carried out archaeological excavation in advance of the construction of a major Welsh Government development site, called Parc Cybi, at Holyhead. The engineering consultancy, Atkins, in association with local construction company, Jones Brothers, managed the first phase of construction works for the Welsh Government, involving the building of roads and other infrastructure on the site.

Over 20 hectares were carefully stripped of topsoil to reveal an archaeological landscape, which was then excavated and recorded. At its height the excavation employed a team of 40 archaeologists working on site full-time - one of the largest excavations in the UK.

The highlights of the excavation were the remains of a 6000 year old Neolithic timber hall and a stone-built Iron Age roundhouse settlement with a complex history of development. However there were many other features including a Neolithic pit containing a stone macehead, Bronze Age and medieval cemeteries and remains of 18th and 19th century farms. The excavation results have demonstrated how people lived and farmed the land from 6000 years ago until the present day.

Early Neolithic rectangular timber building aligned with Trefignath chambered tomb by Andy B on Friday, 15 March 2019
(User Info | Send a Message)
On a plateau at an altitude of 17m OD (SH 2574 8053), a rectangular arrangement of cut features was identified, cut into a natural silt. Immediately to the south was a substantial schist outcrop.

A large number of finds were associated with the features including black chert and flint lithics and early Neolithic ceramics. The building was orientated WSW-ESE and measured approximately 15.2m long and 6m wide. Two parallel rows of five posts, arranged symmetrically about the long axis of the building, formed a central aisle. A slightly
more irregularly pattern of posts and plank slots formed the side and end walls of the building. The structure appears to have been subdivided internally into three separate compartments, a tripartite division of space that is encountered on other comparable Neolithic buildings in Britain and Ireland. The long axis of the structure was
aligned on the Trefignath Neolithic chambered tomb which stands approximately 100m to the NNE and is visible from it through a narrow cleft in the rock outcrop.

The plan and size of the building would be almost identical to that of the Llandygai II building found at Parc Bryn Cegin, except for the eastern bay. These structures seem to have been modular in conception and it is possible additional bays were added either to the original design or in later use if a large building was required.

Premier Inn hotel has been given the go-ahead

The £4m hotel has been supported by the planning committee of Anglesey council

The proposals for an 80-bedroom Premier Inn were lodged by the Conygar Investment Company and the hotel giant in September.
http://www.dailypost.co.uk/business/business-news/premier-inn-hotel-plans-submitted-13627305

It would be built opposite the existing Road King truck stop at Parc Cybi, on the outskirts of Holyhead, and the development also includes a restaurant and bar, with enough parking spaces for 84 vehicles.

This afternoon councillors on the planning committee gave the hotel the green light.

The Parc Cybi truckstop to change Trefignath landscape forever, this along with Land & Lakes ensures that nothing will ever be the same. The Trearddur Dolmen, not being listed will probably end up in a skip, or crushed for hardcore like so many other of Anglesey's neolithic standing stones before it.
