Cromeleque de Vale Maria do Meio
Trip No.1 Entry No.1 Date Added: 23rd Jun 2026
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Portugal (Évora)
Visited: Yes on 15th Jun 2026. My rating: Condition 5 Ambience 5 Access 5

Cromeleque de Vale Maria do Meio submitted by TheCaptain on 8th Nov 2019. A beautiful place, the site itself is rather like a smaller version of Almendres, a sort of open horseshoe shape of about 40 remaining stones with the open end facing towards the east down a gentle slope. The biggest stones are at the upper western side, many of which have been nicely shaped, some of them with carvings.

Log Text: the site was easy to reach from Evora, signs on the street, and even a parking space right in front of the cromeleque. We were there in the evening, with serene atmosphere, on our own.

Interpretative Centre of Évora Megalithism submitted by Aluta on 16th Apr 2022. Setting the menhir upright.
This is not my image but was posted by Ebora Megalithica on their Facebook page. It is only one of about 10 images of the process of moving and placing a menhir without modern machinery. It is a relatively small stone but I thought some people might like to see photos of how it was done.

Fonte do Telheiro
This well is in use since the 15th century at least. It is not holy of sacred in particular, but it is very old.
Near the renovated well they have kept artifacts of the older well, how it used to be.
Opposite the well is an old washing place. Special about this place is that the stone on which the clothes were rubbed, are slate-stones (schist).
In this area you also can find very old sheds or sometimes houses that are...
