TheCaptain visited on 13th Oct 2019 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Several miles along a very narrow and twisty road, and I eventually arrived at the Anta-Capela de Nossa Senhora do Livramento, or Anta-Capela de São Brissos, which was one I really wanted to visit, the white painted dolmen now built into a chapel, complete with blue stripe around the bottom to keep the devil at bay. Despite the satnav trying to take me somewhere else, I found it easy enough, and it has a small car park which had another three cars in it. Before I had even got out of my car, a bloke (French I think) from one of the other cars was over asking if I had the key to the chapel, and was most insistent that I should have it, not taking the fact that I am just an English tourist as an answer! So as I gathered, the chapel was locked up, so could not get to see inside. It's a wierd and beautiful little place, and unlike that at Pavia, this has an extension built onto the back of the dolmen. There is one large stone laying beside the chapel, and traces of its entrance passageway.

The Anta-Capela de Nª Srª do Livramento is a prehistoric burial chamber (Dolmen or Anta) converted into and used as a Christian chapel, located near the village of São Brissos, in the Évora district of Portugal.

Anta-Capela de Nª Srª do Livramento (dolmen-chapel of Our Lady of Livramento), is one of the 104 megalithic monuments listed for the Upper Alentejo in a recent monograph by Master Catarina Oliveira, "Lugar e Memória" (Place and Memory). It's a dolmen converted into a catholic chapel, with an aditional laying stone on the side. The monument was whitewashed with chalk in the common ways of the Alentejo culture. It is the occasional object of reverence in case of a major drought. This monument is classified as IIP - Imóvel de Interesse Público (Estate of Public Interest) since June 18th of 1957.

About the architecture
This megalithic monument was converted into a hermitage in the 17th century. The remains of the dolmen constitute the galilee of the hermitage, and on the north side was constructed a small door that must occupy the dead space of a disappeared pillar. The five pillars of the chamber and its covering hat form the atrium of the hermitage. Remains of the corridor (2 in situ pillars) are also visible at the East side of the monument but are already shattered and nailed to the ground.

About the access
The site is easily located along the narrow, broken surfaced lane running from just north of the village of Santiago do Escoural towards Valverde, on the right hand side of the road.

During a visit in April 2010 I noticed that the GPS coordinates are not quite correct. They should be: Latitude: 38.52464N Longtitude: 08.12948W. Looking at the original coordinates given on this site and using the Meg Portal ACME map I can see that a building on the opposite side of the road has been mistaken for the dolmen chapel.

The site is easily located along the narrow, broken surfaced lane running from just north of the village of Santiago do Escoural towards Valverde, on the right hand side of the road.

This dolmen is featured on page 411 of The Megalithic European by Julian Cope.

Actually at S. Brissos (not Brisos), and named Anta-Capela de N S do Livramento(dolmen-chapel of Our Lady of Livramento), one of the 104 megalithic monuments listed for the Upper Alentejo in a recent monograph by Master Catarina Oliveira, "Lugar e Memória" (Place and Memory).
